Set out with everything prepared to do my first oil change. Hit an obstacle as soon as I started taking the fairing off. The screw at the front of and underneath the fairing screwed vertically up is a little cross threaded. None of the possy screw heads in my socket set fit. So I pull out the bike's tool kit, find the possy screw driver stem - great fits nicely - slot it into the handle [1] and crap too long, not enough ground clearance[2]. So now I'm stuck, can't pull the fairing off due to this small screw. [1] also in the bike's tool kit [2] I'm wondering if my model [3] of CBR originally had a centre stand but may be a previous owner removed it. A quick look underneath showed where the centre stand could have been attached, and the haynes manual suggests there should be a centre stand. If there was a centre stand, the increased ground clearance may be enough to allow the screw driver just fit. [3] 1998 W model --
Simple: clamp the pozi bit in your Mole grips and push up whilst turning the bit with the grips. Or buy a decent socket/bit set that has the bit you need.
Yep, the W model does indeed have a centrestand. You can have mine if you like, cos I can't use it because the bike has been lowered. -- Lesley CBR600FW SBS#11 (with oak-leaf cluster) BOTAFOT#101A UKRMHRC#12 BONY#54P BOB#18 Real burds don't take hormones, they rage naturally
dundonald says... It should have had a centre stand. Yours is either an FW 1998 or a FY W plate. It won't be on a W plate if it's a 1998 reg though. It just so happens that I have a brand new centre stand for an FX/FY model with spring and spindle kicking around here. Do you want it?
Am I a dumbass [1] for not knowing what mole grips are? Valid comment. [1] I'm new to all this DIY business --
Aye that's the one, I was referring to the model rather than reg. It's an R reg. No thanks mate. I'm not too bothered about a centre stand, just bothered about getting something that will fit under the fairing so I can get that screw out. How much would a paddock stand raise the front end? I'll borrow my bro in laws. --
Oh, dear. Get a man in FFS, before you get into trouble. Or you might consider a motorcycle (or car, come to that; same stuff but bigger) maintenance course at your local College of FE. Meanwhile ... http://www.tool-up.co.uk/shop/diy/STA184902.html Learning how to use google: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=Mole+Grips&btnG=Search&meta= is another life skill that comes in dead handy.
Aye I know, may be next time. I will be taking French in the evenings this year. Ok I ballsed up on this one, I'm normally a self sufficient google user. --
I'm just poking fun atchoo, man. Always available to answer queries ( them wot I know the answer to, at least).

I know, cheers! Btw I borrowed my bro in laws paddock stand [1]. Still not enough ground clearance. So when I borrow a set of mole grips I'll give that a try though I don't hold much hope. I used a set of pliars today, they got a pretty good grip on the possy bit but still couldn't move that screw. Talking about that screw, when I do eventually get it out, where does one get a replacement screw for ones fairing? [1] he'd never used it so I had to put the thing together --
