CG125 too slow!

    Hello All

    I have had a couple of CG125's a 95 M now a 96 N post facelift model

The 96 model is more comfortable to ride, the handlebars seem higher as
does the seat, and it seems to run a lot smoother. However the
performance seems worse than the older model. When I am going 60mph, in
5th gear, a slight incline or wind affects me and brings the speed down
to 45/50. This means changing back to 4th as the engine is obviously
    struggling staying in 5th.

I have decided I want a bike with better performance, one that will do
    65/70mph without struggling! However I want to stay with a 125cc 4
stroke for now. I also want it to be fairly comfortable as I sometimes
am riding for 2/3 hours without stopping.

Could anybody advise on possible bikes available that would fit this
description? I have looked at other Honda's and the CBR125 looks
suitable.... I would just like some advice from those in the know on
whether this is a good bike to get or if there are any alternatives
from different manufacturers? I am happy to spend up to £1500 but
preferably less than that on a used bike.

    Thanks

    Ben

What makes you think the CBR125 goes faster than 60mph?

I assume its a faster bike as it has 6 gears, is watercooled and is a
more sportier design than the basic CG??

It would be nice to have better acceleration and a slightly higher top
    speed.

Do you have some sort of restricted licence?
You would be better off getting a larger single, or a 1970s 125 twin
when they had sufficient power as standard.

That's interesting, I would definately consider an older bike. So a
CB125 twin, I will have a look for one. I have looked at CB's before
mostly on ebay, because they look bigger than the CG. I only found bad
examples though at the time, doesn't seem to be many about now. I
assumed they had the same kind of power as the CG, I guess the twin
    exhaust makes the difference then.

I dont fancy doing my full test just yet and want to carry on with a
125, I know you are all probably right that I will get fed up with a
125, but am in no hurry to upgrade yet. Id like to try a slightly
better 125 first before stepping up!

Even if you don't want a significantly bigger bike now , just take your test
and get it over and done with.
Even if you do it on a 125 that you continue to ride afterwards you'll be
able to lose the L-plates , take a passenger , get cheaper insurance and be
ready for a bigger bike when you want one. The sooner you get the licence
the sooner the 2 year restricted period ends.

    Get an NSR125.

Proper bike, derestricted it'll nudge 100mph quite hapily.

    Never experienced that.
Sure you're not thinking about an RS125?

  14. Some of us have bought lots of bikes on Ebay. Sold lots, too. What's
    your problem?

Depends on the item. I've had some real bargains and in other cases
    I've paid too much.

  17. For some things, but not for others. My impression is that bike prices
are on the weak side atm.

I have now found out the sprockets on my CG125 are the correct ones to
enable the lowest gearing. the front sprocket has 14 teeth and the back
one has 41. The only alternative sprockets are 15 for the front and 40
for the back which would make the gearing higher!

I have now replaced the exhaust which has made the bike quieter but it
is still struggling for performance. In 4th it struggles to rev out and
in 5th there is no chance!

I am going to try changing spark plug, oil / filter and air filter
today and see if that helps. I have already used carb cleaner in the
    air intake as well.

anyone got an ideas? It's like the engine is just not producing the
power for it to rev out. It revs out in 3rd gear at about 53mph. 4th
will go close to 60 and 5th doesnt go any further unless down a hill!

Sounds pretty normal to me. 60mph is about tops unless you're really
light/lie flat on the tank/go downhill. Why did you expect more?

My last CG125, older shape, possibly lighter bike, did 65 easily and 70
    at times.

It would make the difference to long journeys, at the moment I have to
    keep alternating between 4th and 5th when i'm going 55/60. 5th
struggles to maintain this speed, and drops to 50 if winds against me
    or a slight incline!
