Servicing the KLE500 today and the chain was stuffed - running a tight spot.
At 10.5k miles. Seems a bit low for an O ring original fitment chain.

The sprockets looked good so I ignored the advice often given and just
bought a new chain. The man at M&P suggested that it was poor lubrication
and that I buy a Scottoiler. I explained that I used Silcolene chain lube
fairly regularly (The chains on my XT500and ER500 had both done more than
10.5k when I sold the bikes and they had no tight spots). Not good enough
says he - buy a Scottoiler.

What chain lube and lubrication regime do you use?

My KLE has a Scottoiler. The chain has needed no adjustment in 2200 miles
and there are no tight spots.

Snottoiler. My OE chain/sprox have done in excess of 15000 miles and they're
in pretty good nick. They won't be getting changed this side of 20000
anyway. AND it's a Kwak chain.

I use whatever chainsaw oil is in the big plastic jug of chainsaw oil that
that nice Mr Gyp gave me, may moons ago.

Ducati (hard on chains because of the power pulses and minimal driveline
shock absorption): loads of lube. And chains only last 15k.

  13. Eatmorepies has brought this to us :
VFR 750 - No adjustment for at least 12K miles, chain/chainset has done
20k. No tight spots and no noticeable wear. I use an electronic pumped
chain lubricator by the name of the McCoy, filled with a 50/50 mix of
engine oil/chainsaw oil. It uses almost no oil to provide the
    lubrication.

Crap. Just do it little and often. My Blackbird got to 26K on the
    original chain doing this.

Hum. The super-heavy-duty O-ring chain I put onto my Aprilia is looked
after pretty carefully but with manual lubing; it looks fine but it's
begun to stretch at only 5K miles. The previous chain had probably
been on the bike from new but had clearly been neglected and I
replaced it at about 8K miles (assuming the odometer wasn't lying),
though to be fair it wasn't *that* badly stretched. The one on my old
TLR did about 10k and was still in reasonably good nick when I sold
it, but that had a Motrax oiler.

I use Homebase or equivalent chainsaw oil these days, applied with an
old paintbrush. I'll be interested to see how well the R1's chain
lasts - mega-heavy-duty X-ring, fitted less than a thousand miles ago.

So, in conclusion, buy a shaftie.

Really? It was in pretty good nick when I bought it, although it was in
need of a clean. I let the Scottoiler I fitted do that for me and it's
    lovely now.
