I've got the holiday booked, so am at least going over there. If it's
really abysmal then I'll divert to a hotel, but it looks like the
worst of it will be Friday, which isn't the end of the world.

Like I said, you need to go down to 1000-1500 kCal a day if you want to
loose weight without heavy exercise. It isn't that easy to do but for a
start give up all carbs, as if you were a Sugarmong. Oatcakes and
humous for brekkies. Skip lunch, maybe a hobnob. Salad and fish for
tea. No soft drinks, small splash of milk in your tea. Bread,
potatoes, cereals etc are right out.

Mine's 25.5, it used to be 19-ish in my mid 20's when I had a far more
    mobile job.

Ha. No, it was 24.9, though I've just had a quick check and a month of
holidays and weekends away has shot it up to 25.9 so I'm faced with
withdrawing the insult or declaring myself a fat bastard too.

    I r a fat bastard.

and no-one's thought to mention how high the calorific value of
various alcoholic drinks are (I did a little research into this when
starting to lose weight under doctor's orders at the start of this
    year):

    kcal per 100ml:

    Champagne 76
    White Wine (medium) 80
    Red Wine 68
    Lager (Stella 5%) 40.3
    Guinness 30
    Gin/Vodka 222

You could just add about 2mm to your height. Thicken the soles of your
feet or throw your head back or something.

Aye, that's my downfall. Doc labelled me 'centrally obese' at the last
    visit.

    Guinness it is then.

Not the most useful comparison chart, since meaures differ between
drinks. As a rule of thumb, a double measure is 100 calories, a pint is
200 and bottle of plonk is 500. Much easier to do the maths that way.

I'd always assumed 250-300 calories a pint, so not all that far off.

Apart from this past weekend I've been having only the odd can or
glass of wine anyway, so would be surprised if booze is playing a big
part. Perhaps I'll go tee total after chimay anyway and see if weight
    drops off.
