Which part of "It has a stainless steel exhaust system with a Micron
carbon fibre can," don't you understand? Read the fucking description.

Anyway, it might be £600 for you to get an exhaust fitted, but some of
us know our way round spanners and could do it cheaper.

I'm not sticking up for the OP cos I think anyone who calls a bike cheap
at the start of an auction is a ****, but it has a new exhaust fitted
already. Someone like Mr Bonwick could probably fit helicoils with the
engine still in the frame and the cylinder head still on the barrel.

I did. Just because it's stainless doesn't mean it's in fine shape.

They're supposedly stainless as standard, but they still manage to rot
    through.
Well, yes. But that's the going rate to have a VFR exhaust system
    fitted.
Possibly. VFR exhausts are notorious for being a complete PITA to remove
and refit..... being cynical, you'd have to ask why the OP hasn't had
the '50 quid' job done and a new MOT stuck on it. Reading between the
lines, I'd suggest it's because it's a PITA of a job to do and he's
found out it's likely to cost more than the difference between his
current asking price and it's market value with MOT.

Why don't you ever apply this kind of logic when you buy a POS Alfa?

You'd save a fucking fortune and wouldn't have a driveway littered with
    piles of scrap.

  8. We were discussing this sort of thing last night, at Ogden's bash. If
it'll sail through an MoT, then why not do it yourself, and lift the
value of the vehicle (whatever it is) by x%?

I always treat any claim that "It will pass an MoT, easy" as meaning
    "It' won't".

The header pipes and collector box are stainless steel from Motad, I fitted
them in September 2005 (it cost me £446.05). The end can is a carbon fibre
Micron which has been on the bike as long as I've owned it. The exhaust
system as a whole is in very good condition. I've brought another bike
(Buell XB12S) and really can't be arsed to fix it. But if I've still got it
when the weather warms up I will fix and I guess it will sell for
£1500/2000. I've also got a 1977 Jota that I could be persuaded to sell (
    and a 2000 YZ426 come to that)

No it wasn't, especially if one didn't look at the auction.

Erm, Lozzo, I assume you've had a VFR apart far enough to say, *see*
the studs on the rear head?

    Just like, wondering.

I've worked on a couple of VFRs. The front ones aren't so bad. If they
were rear ones I'd run a mile. Mind, even taking the head off isn't a
hugely major job with injection and gear driven cams. It's not something
I'd shy away from, but if I was doing it for someone else I'd want top
    dollar for the work.

I somehow assumed that the problem is a stud on the rear, as I can't
quite see why SteveH would think that it was such a big job if a front
    stud was mullered...
Indeed, hence the 600 quid bill...

I was making the assumption that the whole exhaust was likely to have to
be worked loose, needing at least some bits replacing in the process.

Which is why I am trying to make the point, it's the front studs and
once all the fairings are out of the way there's very little to restrict
work. Rads are side mounted so shouldn't need to come off to gain
access. Having looked at a photo of a stripped 800i, it all looks pretty
easy to get to, with plenty of room to work in as there are no frame
downtubes or other gubbins getting in the way.
3 hours each way I reckon so not a huge amount of time. It'd definitely
have the head off, repaired and back on in a day. Certainly not 600
quid. I still maintain you could do it with the head still on the bike,
but obviously Steve, being a top-flight retail executive and reknowned
    motorcycle repair expert, knows better.
