Rumour on demon.service has it that their new farmed out news server is much better than the old set up. Is that equally strangulated? I might give it a try again. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Gilera Nordwest * 2 Yamaha WR250Z | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +----------------------------------------------------------------+

Damn right. I often had an odd issue when I was abroad - Mac Mail would receive mail, but wouldn't allow outgoing stuff. IDNet correctly identified it as an issue with port security in many hotels and conference centres, told me to switch to port x, and problem solved. Just recently, my system went tits-up. On the phone, a proper hume answered, said: "Hm, that's funny, because we're seeing you at our end..." and deduced that BT was having problems. As they were - at the Sutton/Cheam exchange, as it transpired. I like IDNet. Not cheap, but you get what you (don't) pay for with the cheapies, I have found.
I dunno who's next in the IDNet 'referral discount' chain, but unless someone puts their hand up, try me....

[ re Demon ] I joined Demon within months of their startup. All was well for years. Then they got borged by Thus and it all went downhill. Six months ago I got got more than usually pissed off with incompetance and moved to Gradwell when they started offering broadband. Excellent service from folks with a clue.
I had something similar when the Toothill exchange went bye-bye recently. BT got the exchange back working fairly quickly but didn't bother to reset the DSL bit. So my router couldn't even sync.. IDNet badgered them until they fixed it. Unlike Demon (who in a similar circumstance required me to raise a call with BT - something that nearly ended up costing me £65 when BT said it was a no-fault callout..) Phil.
Exactly what happened to me. IDNet pestered BT to let them know when the exchange problem would be fixed, and told me BT's ETA (it was later than BT said it would be, of course, but that's not IDNet's fault). True, they cost two or three times as much as an average ISP, and four or five times as much as a pikey one, but the key thing is that they deliver, their service works, and on the rare occasions when it doesn't, they answer the phones promptly and sort it quickly. It's worth paying the extra for the avoidance of hassle and high blood pressure, IMHO. Shame to see that Demon is now going the same way that Pipex went, but I suppose it'll mean that the business model of 'high price, excellent service' will continue to work for small independents.
(The Older Gentleman) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying: Indeed. We get our office connection through Be LLU, but purchased through an outfit called Cerberus - http://www.cerberusnetworks.co.uk - who wrap an extra layer of support around it. The comparison between Cerberus' support and Be directly is night & day. WELL worth the few extra quid a month.
I had a different problem. Several times a day the connection would hang for a minute or two. IDNet sent me a different router to try, and having established it wasn't that, hounded BT (who were claiming it was unavoidable congestion at the exchange) until the fault disappeared. Absolutely.
