I have started XMAS shopping early and got my small son a 90cc trail bike.
I know nothing about motor bikes and clothing/safety gear.
I am now looking to get a helmet and his head size is 52.5 cm. Should I go
    for a a 53 cm helmet or 54 cm?
Appreciate any advice. Also, what other safety gear/clothing will he need.
He will only be using for running around, not serious racing.
    TIA

Take him to a motorcycle clothing shop, get him to try on a few
helmets and buy the one that fits the best/is most comfortable. To
assess fit, when he has it settled on his head and fastened, try to
pull it off his head by pulling upwards and forwards on the rear of
the helmet. If it slips up it is too big - but there will be staff in
    the shop to advise you.
Running around? How old is he - not road-legal age, obviously. It
all depends how much damage you want to see him take. Go to a shop as
above and ask - I hope you have deep pockets ... or let him fall of a
few times and learn by his pain to get better.

Seriously, there are motocross protectors which are armour pads
mounted on a lightweight (and cool!) mesh vest affair that cover the
sticky-out bits quite well, that are reasonably priced. And a good
pair of gloves. And a pair of m/x trousis with armour or pads in
    knees and hips.

That'll do to start with ;-)

Yea, what Rusty said and don't forget a cup. Below are excerpts from
another group of a guy who had everything but the cup......
    Day One
On the way back down, rubbernecking of course, I hit a rock which threw me
into the ditch and into the bank. This slightly misaligned the forks, bent
the shifter back and ripped off the footpeg. The bike reared up, I moved
forward and delivered an punishing blow to the gas tank with my private
    parts.
    Day Two
At the moment, my balls are about twice normal size (even after an evening
with ice pack) and my whanger is swollen and turning black. Sure hope it
    doesn't fall off.
