Choices, choices.

As you may have noticed I'm buying a new bike in the new year. I've
got a budget of £6500 and I was originally wanting to buy a new one.
This didn't give me a stunning amount of choice, basically:

    Bandit 12
    SV1000S

Looking at year old secondhand machines with less an 3k on the clock I
    can have:

    2002 R1
    2002 GSXR1000
    2003 GSXR750
2000 RSV Mille (there are some Rs in my price range but the mileage is
    higher)
    2002 Fireblade
    2003 ZX9R
    2003 Aprilia Tuono

So now I'm spoilt for choice. What would you have and why? My first
love is for sportsbikes and I probably would be ecstatically happy
with any of them. I've owned a GSXR750 so it might be nice to go for
    another make.

Here's a thought, why not get a used bandit 12 and see if you have *fun*
on it, which is what you complained was missing on the gixxer.

Suppose only own it for 6 months or so but buy whilst it's still cold
and bikes are cheap you could sell in the middle of summer and not lose
    a penny.

    Just a thought, like.

Believe me, after 8 months off, any bike will be fun. I also will not
be commuting daily on it, which was what was taking the fun out of
    riding the GSXR.
And not a bad one at that. However, say I did then decide I want
another full on sportsbike, buying in the middle of summer will cost
me a premium. Now is really the best time to buy the litre
    sportsbikes.

  4. Isn't this simple? - you want a sports bike. No two ways about it. If
that's what you want and can afford and are happy to dice with Mr Plod
    on then buy one.

If you buy the Bandit 12 and still really want a sports bike you will be
forever casting longing glances at sports bike and your Bandit 12 won't
    love you anymore ;-)

Yeah, I guess it is. No dicing with Mr Plod though. I can't afford
anymore points so will be being extra careful.
    Very true.

Somehow I thought you might say that. It's a very fine line between
that and the R1 though. It might be nice to have another Yam.
Dunno about the K3s. I'm having trouble finding one for less than 7k
with under 5k on it. I won't consider one with more than that unless
    it's a real bargain.

    K2s with 2-4k on seem to be 6-6.5k. Mind you I did see a K1 wth 600
    miles on it for 6k.
Unlikely. I managed to keep the 750 front wheel on the ground and I'm
sure I will with a Thou. Mainly because I can't afford to flip it.

I've budgetted £1000 for insurance. This covers the range of 400 quid
for anew B12 FC to £1000 for a Mille R with every bit of security
    imaginable.
How much might you be looking for?

  11. Mille or ZX9R.

The one because it's Italian and the other because it's still a
    brilliant road bike.

That's why they're on the shortlist.
I know, but for some reason Kawasakis have ever really pushed my
buttons. On the otherhand it's lot of bike for very little money with
    the 10R coming out.

Ahhhhh,,,,,, in that case sir (slips nonchalantly into evangelical mode)
why not split the dosh two ways: Buy a nice little motocrosser for about
£3K for the wild fun bit and, um, maybe one of the 600 super sprouts circa
Y2K ish with the rest for general transport while retaining a bit of
    residual quality?

Local dealer up here is selling new SV1000Ss for 5300 (www.cupar.co.uk).

    2nd hand Busa, in black.
    Why? Just because!

The only one from your list I have ridden is the Bandit 12. Its a
nice bike, handles well, great for overtaking, but I felt the engine
wasn't as lively as it should be, compared with my GSX1100F (on a good
    day that is).

Having read the thread, that sounds the best plan IMO.

    <fx:heresy>It needn't be a 9R, either</h>
