    Hello,

I'm a novice concerning Digital Video. There are a few people who have
successfully attached an external (bullet-type) camera to a DV-Camera IIRC,
but that's not a must, would be nice though....

Given the choice between a JVC GR-D70 and a Sony TRV14E, which would you
    choose. The JVC has DV In/Out and 8mb flash memory,but looks a bit plasticy;
the Sony looks better and arguably has a better lense, buy has no flash
    memory and no DV-in.

    Please make my mind up...

    1) What are you going to do with a pissy 8 meg flash memory?
    2) All DV cameras support DV-in, you just have to enable it, like
unlocking the region encoding of a DVD drive.

To attach an analogue helmet-cam you'll need to look for AV-In.
Unless you can buy a firewire helmet-cam?
Dunno if you've seen this review of the JVC...
    http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/jvc_grd70_camcorder_review.htm
.... but the Conclusion would put me right off...
    "Conclusion
Reviewing the JVC camcorder really made me long for a Sony or a Canon. It's
too bad. The video, low light, and still quality of the GR-D70 is really
terrible for a camcorder in this price range. The camcorder also lacks the
audio options that a camcorder costing $600 should have. The ideas behind
good manual control are there, however JVC failed to take it to the extra
step that would put the manual control of the GR-D70 on the same level as
the Canon ZRs. Many camcorders that do poorly in the more professional
features arena sometimes excel in the point in shoot area. However, besides
including a nice fully auto mode, I can't say the GR-D70 is a good point and
shoot camcorder. Besides a nice weight, the handling is terrible and the
video quality in auto mode is just terrible. I really have to recomend
against the GR-D70. It's a nice effort however there are much better
    camcorders"
The Sony gets a better review here...

Re 1) Upgradeable to 128, plus there's a tape wotsit, suppose the 8 meg is
    for the stills
    Re 2) .... how?

I'm lead to believe that this is no longer the case. I think a number of
recent models from Sony now have the facility missing from the hardware,
rather than just the firmware, which went further to satisfy Customs &
Excise. I remember reading about it when I bought a DV-in enabler for my
    Sony TRV-230E (which does).

Worth looking for an enabler that is compatible with the camcorder before
    making that final purchasing decision.
