Yes. I grew up in a NQ sugar town where the inhabitants were mostly
southern European immigrants. I had never heard of pizza until I left
NQ as a teenager, and I doubt if any of the Italian kids of my age had
    either.
As for the relative value of money, a rare treat was to be allowed to
ride our bikes 10 miles into town on a Saturday afternoon to attend
the matinee at the local picture show. You got to see a few newsreels,
a lot of Warner Bros and Disney cartoons, a B Movie and the main
feature, with enough time left over for the ride home. We were given 2
bob (20c) each and that would pay for a drink, entry into the theatre,
ice cream and Jaffas at interval, with some change left over to give
back to Mum at home. I have to admit though that some of those
homeward trips could be scary if the main feature was The Creature
from the Black Lagoon or somesuch.
    Yes, kids these days...

  2. I hope you rolled those Jaffas down between the seats. If you didn't
you are just making that story up :)

Big old theatre with rows of canvas seats and plenty of space
    underneath..?
    Long inclined wooden floor..?
Can you imagine any other use for Jaffas? :)

Well, I always ate my Jaffas, when I had them. I lived in town so
walked to the matinee on Sat avo. We got 1/-, 6d to get in and 6d for
two choo-choo bars. With two of those you could chew through the whole
    movie.

I reckon you were gettin' ripped off there Theo!
I'm sure I only paid 2c for Choo Choo bars in the mid 60s.

Don't remember myself but I remember finding 5c in the street and buying
a scoop of chips with it. A *big* scoop, about 3 times bigger than what
    you get now...

    Hamburgers were 15c.

And the person who lost that 5c peice was pissing themselves for
carelessly losing 3 days wages, *just like that*!

The buggers went up to ten cents each in the mid seventies.
Sometimes, when we couldn't scratch together a whole ten
cents, we had to forgo the choo choo bars and have a redskin
instead, *they* were only three cents.

The standard conversion from 3d to decimal currency was 2c. But that's
a very long time between price rises.

    Pfft... amateurs...

We used to buy tickets on the Mezzanine floor and throw them down at the
people on the ground floor :)

I used to leave primary school at lunch break, ride down to town on my
push bike (imagine that being allowed now!) and buy a piece of fish 2
potato cakes and minimum chips (or a piece of fish and half a dozen
    potato cakes) for 10c.

The mezzanine seats were cheaper. The bottom floor had been renovated
with modern (well 60's modern) seats and carpet.

The old mezzanine was left with 1930's era metal frame seats with
leather covered wooden seats (no padding). These days they'd probably
be worth money... but not back then, the 60's was a 'newer = better'
time and going to the pictures was an occasional treat restricted to
such occasions as birthdays and out of town visitors.

I wouldn't have been game to have snuck in, my old man would have beaten
    the shit out of me.

... and not once did the irony of buying chips *and* potato scallops
    occur to us.

    I think I've been *whooshed*...

I buy chips and potato cakes (or scallops) along with either fish or dim
sims (or fish and dim sims) when I go to buy take away from the local
fish and chippery for for mob at home.

Is there some reason one can't eat potato cakes and chips together?

You roll over too easily! It's harsh week, fight man! fight!
Yeah, 'course! Is there another way?

Nope! If "fish 'n' chips" is the standard meal, then "fish 'n' chips
'n' two potato scallops thanks" is the high-class version!

It's just ever-so-slightly ironic that the chips and the scallops
are both built from potatoes, that's all.
