City tolls

  1. Hi UK Bikers,
Hello from Sydney, Oz. I wonder if any London riders can help me with
    a question.

Is there a toll for private motor vehicles to enter central London,
and if so, are motorcycles and scooters exempt?

A report here has floated the idea of charging a toll to enter central
    Sydney, ie.:
"Under the model, city residents, taxis, buses and commercial vehicles
would be exempted from the $6 toll, which is about half the charge
introduced in London this year under a similar scheme." (Sydney
    Morning Herald 27 Aug 03)

Is the above information about London correct? If the toll is really
about solving congestion, bikes should also be exempt.

Thanks for any info you may have.

Ed Vesterberg was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
It's actually a toll for any car, van or lorry, not only private
vehicles. And you're correct, powered two-wheelers are exempt at the
    moment.
Bikes are exempt, as mentioned above. Residents in the charging area
have to pay, but they can register for a 90% discount. AFAIK
commercial vehicles aren't exempt, either. Busses and taxis are (I
think) as the aim was to get people using public transport.

  3. Yes. Weekends are free, though.
