This afternoon will most probably be fluids, filters and plugs day for the Zephyr. What is the best way of cleaning the air filter? (previously I have bought a new one, but the old one never looks that bad so I reckon I'm going to reuse the old one). Would rinsing it in paraffin, following by a soak in oil be appropriate (it's one of the foam type ones, not a paper or K&N type thing) Or am I just a fucking pikey? -- Dan L 1996 Kawasaki ZR1100 Zephyr BOTAFOT #140 (KotL 2005/6) X-FOT#000 DIAABTCOD #26 BOMB#18 (slow) OMF#11

In uk.rec.motorcycles, Dan L belched forth and ejected the following: It's Shirly, innit. She's found out exactly how much it costs to run your bike.
Dan L says... Go to your local Kawasaki dealer, ask for an air filter for the Zephyr and walk out having just bought a brand new ZRX1200. Go on, YKIMS.

I used to use gunk, then rinse with hot water, let it dry and then a quick squirt of chain oil. Worked fine for me.
If it's just a displosable dry filter, I'd replace it according to whatever the manual says. My road bikes use disposable paper ones, which are easy if a tad expensive. My YZ uses a re-usable foam one. Cleaning and re-oiling that filter is an utterly loathsome, mucky job, but cheap.
Depends on the foam. Some foams don't like some oils and the airflow through them is badly affected or the foam could disintregrate. If the manual says it's ok, or if you were really stuck then try it. They're cheap enough, usually.
Grimly Curmudgeon tossed off: A new OEM one is about £12.00. They come pre oiled, but the manual says they need additional oil. The one I took out today had done 3000 miles and wasn't too bad, so I turned it inside out to clean out the visible dead flies etc, then coated it liberally with clean oil, wrung it out and refitted it. The rest of the jobs went reasonably okay, with the exception of plugs 5 and 6, which as usual were utterly dispicable cunts. -- Dan L 1996 Kawasaki ZR1100 Zephyr BOTAFOT #140 (KotL 2005/6) X-FOT#000 DIAABTCOD #26 BOMB#18 (slow) OMF#11
3000 is bugger all for a filter, so I'd expect that one to be re-useable for a couple of times if it's ok to re-oil it. The manual doesn't specify any particular oil, does it? Apart from engine oil, I mean.
Grimly Curmudgeon tossed off: It does, although I can't check as I left the manual in the shed and cba to go and get it. I use some Scottoil I had left over from when I had the Honda as it's not too sticky. -- Dan L 1996 Kawasaki ZR1100 Zephyr BOTAFOT #140 (KotL 2005/6) X-FOT#000 DIAABTCOD #26 BOMB#18 (slow) OMF#11
Soak in petrol in a bucket, then blow with an airline. That's what the service guys do and charge you for a new filter
