Any tips on how to shift ingrained crap/tar/grease e.t.c. off brushed alloy
    exhausts as on my SV1000?

3m Scotchbrite pad. You'll probably find one in your kitchen. Look for a
small sponge with a rough pad on one side.

An SV1000 couldn't possibly "have ingrained crap/tar/grease". They only
came out this year. Ride the bugger till next year and then clean it.
