cleaning contaminated discs?

  1. What you say tallies exactly with what Brian Giles (BMW guru, whose
advice I trust utterly) says about supposedly worn BMW discs. He usually
finds they've been used with not-from-zer-Fatherland pads.

  2. Hmm... same root cause as I've always believed - keeping the pad in
contact after stopping - but different effect, leading to the same
solution to the problem - skimming, in extremis.

Grimly Curmudgeon took a blunt brush and painted...
The thing I never even thought about was the formation of carbides in the
surface of discs, which just get worse and worse even after skimming the disc
or trying to use the brakes to "clean the disc".

I love people who (a) know what they're talking about in extremis, and (b)
    can explain it well.

It's a pity I'll never be the latter!

  4. For those of you who may even slightly care:

A new set of pads and a few goes over the discs while waiting for the
pads with kitchen roll / clean rag and brake cleaner has done the job.
The feel of the forks diving again was rather pleasent.

    Thanks for the advice chaps.

    cheers
