  3. Echo that. And not likely to be flooded out either, we hope. BoM are
saying the Brisbane River won't peak until Thursday.

With the dams at 190% and the release , in conjunction with king tides
at 3 pm tomorrow certainly the Eagle st cbd flooding will add another 3
    metres or so
    Some areas will be decimated

  5. Shit! Wivenhoe Dam hardly made any difference, did it. 1974 all over again.

Well talking to spies in the city they claim the kiing tomorrow could be
    5 metres over Eagle st
    so shades of '74
the flooded area is now twice the size of Victoria

    So far so good Johno.
Wasted a day-off today when work shut down and everyone was sent home at 12.
I was actually in town at an appointment so I had the same trouble with
flooding and cancelled trains but I didn't get the day's pay!
Tonight's the big flood-peak then tomorrow is the FUKKIN' HUGE FLOOD PEAK so
check back here in 24hrs for the real answer.
    Cheers (glub glub)

  10. That will make most Queenslanders feel right at home, seeing most of them
    came from Victoria

And any Brits - in 2009 Cumbria, UK had 190mm rain in 24 hours, but at
Toowoomba there was 160mm rain in 36 hours.

Myself - I've given up wearing wet weather gear until after the
weekend, instead I'm having a complete change every day instead.

BTW I'm not trying to suggest that Cumbria was a worse disaster -
Australia is a very dry country and UK is very wet, so you can't
directly compare the rainfall. It will run off the land differently,
but it does indicate what that quantity of rain is like. ...and the
Brits will be feeling at home.

We're having a fundraiser for QLD here tomorrow. I think we should
wait until after Friday - when Melbourne is due to get a deluge!

Are those figures correct because they don't actually sound very
devastating but I'm sure those numbers are worse than I imagine.
Unrelated, but according to wiki the 24hr rainfall record is 1,869.9mm
(a tad over 6ft) on the Indian Ocean island of Reunion during a cyclone
and 3,929 millimetres in 72 hrs on the same island.

Oh ghod I've stuffed up again. The UK figure was too small. Well
    spotted, Nev.

"At Seathwaite Farm, Borrowdale, rainfall was recorded at 314.4
millimetres (12.38 in) in a 24-hour period which the Met Office state
is provisionally a UK record for any single location." [source:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cumbria_flooding#Event]

"The city of Toowoomba, in the Darling Downs, was hit by flash
flooding after more than 160 millimetres (6.3 in) of rain fell in 36
hours to 10 January 2011" [source:

    Yes
I once drove through a cyclone (Charlie, 1988) midnight to dawn in a
Nissan Patrol ute - a big vehicle. It was like driving through a
crashing surf. We were getting radio reports from local properties
registering 300mm per hour, and this (similar figures) was confirmed
    by BOM later.
Next morning at smoko, the conversation was all about the heavy rain.
One guy said he did not know exact figures but his wheelie bin was
full that morning. Another guy, not to be outdone said that was
nothing, both of his wheelie bins were full that morning.
