Colorado from SF, which way?

So we've got three days to get from SF to some place north of Steamboat
Springs, where hopefully we will meet the giant trout.
But we were hoping to take a trout enriched route on the way there, with
numerous twisty roads alongside magnificent rivers.
Now I was up that through Idaho's Snake River last summer, and western
Wyoming ( is that a redundancy?) , which seems to be generally in the right
    direction toward Colorado.
I was hoping someone would have a suggestion or two for us. We are going
sometime this July, so please don't send us through Death Valley>.;)
Oh and I got my new topcase installed today, marrying some German parts to
some Italian parts, and it turned out like this:

    I can't wait.

I have Laguna and a T-Hill track day in July but other than that you're
welcome to remain over night at the Busy Little Shop... it will afford a
140 mile head start to your destination...

  4. I am heading up to Spokane for the BMW rally next month, probably going out
Hwy 50 since the RS has never done it...same bike as yours, Jim. Longest
stretch is 110 miles (Fallon to Austin) I get about 200-225 from a tank, at
legal speeds, but you (or I) tend to get a little throttle happy out there
on Hwy 50, wonderful road it is, too. I was running it on a K75s chasing
some guy from Reno BMW...110-125 on the straights, down to 90 in the
corners...and he was faster than that. I went through that tank VERY
    quickly...sucking fumes in Austin.

I'd say the important thing is to start by getting across the central
valley as quick as possible. Or do it at night. It gets hot out there
this time of year. There are several good routes through the Sierras,
north or south of I-80. Take one of those and Tahoe becomes a nice
days ride from your start point...

yah, I am an expert on cooling off solutions, having had ms since '98. I
have made a study of what works best and the best ways to go and when. one
thing I can't ever really do is get boiled or I am in deep doodoo.
    Some of my methods are:
Ice water in your mouth, in your helmet, in your underwear, in your
aerostich, in your shoes ( if it's really bad). Also bring small cooler in
side case or tanks bag to keep ice cubes, to put in bandana, in helmet, in
    aerostich and so on.
that's why I always take advantage of a nice cold and rainy day to ride in.
    oh boy!

Still there Jim? I'm looking at blasting over to the 70/utah
191/Moab/Arches N.P. area in early July. The way I see it, there are
basically two choices--80 or 50. 80 offers increased travelers' amenities
and more traffic and 50 offers those delicious high speed runs and open
ranges. I'm tending towards those lonely views on 50 and my first leg to
Ely, SF to Ely 538 miles. Ely to Utah 191 approx. 350 miles.
