Well, I am still none the wiser.

Why, when the throttle works just fine with the pull cable, do I need a push
    one as well?

It's useful to have a cable to pull the throttle shut, as depending on a
little breakable spring to shut the throttle is not always such a good
    idea.

  3. If the 'pull to open' throttle cable is badly lubricated and/or the throttle
grip is stiff, the spring pressure on the cable might not be enough to pull
it back and close the throttle. Having the 'pull to close' cable means
you're less likely to find yourself with the throttle stuck open.

To close the throttle should the spring return fail.

Adjust the path and slack in the push cable until it doesn't interfere
    with the pull cable anymore.

Carb sliders can get stuck (and occasionally will do so), no matter
which type of carb that is (flat slide or round slide).
Additionally you have a backup if the pull cable snaps - you just
connect the push cable to the pull side of the carb mechanism and hey
presto! at least you can get home.

Heh, great idea Tom, but it would involve taking the carbs off to do it.

Don't tell me that you would have to take the carbs off in order to
    mount a new throttle cable?!
That would be a really shitty designed bike, then...

Well, that's what I had to do to fit the new one last week. I can see no
other way of doing it, but SWK different may be along.
