Nonsence. Its all about language and culture. First experienced with an
old fellow in Swaziland who spent many an hour teaching me about his
language and culture whilst leaning on his gardening tools and
    improving his English.
There has never been any apartheid in Swaziland. SiSwati is the local
language and is closely related to Zulu. This knowledge stood me in very
good stead later when working with the local population in South Africa.
I never learned more than a smattering of Afrikaans but I got on much
better with the staff than most people in South Africa who never
bothered to learn a native language.

"Sir" is a mild term of respect, think "dear sir or madam".
"Mdala" carries much more meaning, it implies grey hair and is only
applied to the oldest and wisest person present. In African cultures
    age is VERY important.
Understand this and you can understand why it is so difficult to get rid
of that **** Mugabe. His age alone is enough to guarantee traditional
    respect and obedience.

I have black friends there, Port Eliz, who say just that. They would
come to the UK again if it wasn't for the kids being mid education.

Yeah right. I had an uncle move to South Africa back in the 70's and he was
required to employ a couple of locals. They were so happy with this
arrangement they attacked him with a machette causing some pretty messy
    damage.
Indeed and the other side is the South Africans and white immigrants don't
like blacks and the blacks don't like them back.
