It seems that a visit to the embassy is in order if I want to board our
    flight to Seattle this summer.

    Bugger.

Does this mean the visa waiver scheme no longer applies?
Should I keep up at the back?

Heh, only if they know something that I don't.

Though, back in 2005 we were leaving Ottawa for San Francisco, on an
extended journey back to the UK, and a phone call had to be made before
I could check in, so I guess I'm triggering something somewhere.

When you get there, I can highly recommend the roof of the car park
opposite the terminal for a spot of sun-bathing.

It still does, IIRC, if you have a biometric passport. Otherwise, yeah
    you need a visa.

I suspect so but it doesn't work in the way you might think.

Yes. They have to protect their domestic production from the threat of
    foreign imports.
