I think 2 wheeled roadcraft and 4 wheeled roadcraft are sufficiently
different. Besides knowing the rules, and having some idea that people
are stupid on the road occasionally there's no real advantage to prior
    cage experience.

Even knowing the road rules and being comfortable on the road, getting
on a bike was quite a frightening prospect (for me at least) I have a
lot of sympathy (empathy?) for new-to-the-road and new-to-bikes riders
    on that basis.

Ta mate. Just about to have one or two anyway so I can face the washing
up. Good thing I can fix computers, keeps me in free Coopers...
I ordered the Factory and the Haynes manuals for the '04 from Lilley's
    yesterday.

I'm gunna make a push to get it done in the next few months.

    The plan is;

Have holed '04 radiator tank repaired.
Replace destroyed '04 muffler with new/ebay muff.
New rubber parts, grips and hoses, etc.
New brake pads, pistons, seals, lines.
    New bearings, seals, hoses throughout.
New '04 outer clutch cover and alternator cover to replace crash
    damaged ones.
1050 Speed Triple airbox required to use '98 tank with '04 engine.
Transfer engine, wiring loom, radiators, throttle bodies, headers, dash
and ECU from '04 to the '98.
Fit Ohlins shock and springs, new fork seals.
    New chain, sprockets.
    Aquire new Tuneboy licence.
Run it up to Cairns and tune it sweetly.
    New tyres.
    Ride...

Paint still up in the air... Most likely will run with black on black.

Now, back to today and the bloody washing up. Fsssst! Cheers...

I nearly made it into that group, I was 28 when I got my Ls (in the
    ACT).

If you look at the photos here[1], you can see that I was diligently
displaying my P-plates all the way around Australia in 2002. ;-)

There was a bloke down here a few years back who drove his car off the
Monaro highway and was found 3 days later.

At the time it was reported as a "miracle survival" story, some years
later the news came out that he'd been attempting suicide but missed
    the tree.

Personally, after my experience of the Canyon Swing at Queenstown[1]
I'd ride to the lookout at the Nullarbor cliffs[2] and take a dive off
the edge. Much better way to go.

It's my understanding many feel the same and sadly some are to slow
    making the adjustments and re-learning
I remember years ago when doing some race track work as a teen I had to
seek assistance dropping the bike far enough onto the right side and
once shown had to find some knee knob's

perhaps you perceptions are skewed as many have the problem being
    major handed to the right

I concur. I suspect that any speed in a car above about 50km/h into
an immobile object and the outcome is essentially a lottery.

Well another cycle got hit last night locally

same intersection as the last several all in a similar manner so after

ripping into the local member maybe something will be sorted .Anyway you

view the problem two wheels is a recipe for injury atm and far as I can

see in the multiple vehicle hits the two wheeler seems less at fault

maybe I am biased but not seeing someone coming what ever the reason is
    no excuse .

Stefan Eriksson, ex-head of the Gizmondo company, now in jail, crashed
his Ferrari Enzo at 300 km/h north of Los Angeles when he hit a bump and
became airborne. Wreckage was distributed along more than 400m of
highway, and the Ferrari was completely destroyed. He walked away without
a scratch, and his passenger ran away, presumably equally unscratched.
    The airbags worked.

Up-spec Mercedes and Volvo simply won't let you drive into things at any
speed, and more and more manufacturers will deploy this sort of
technology because it isn't very expensive.

I always considered the Cali to be a tourer rather than a cruiser. It
is definitely not a "feet forward" motorcycle.

How can they get stats on returnees? I've had a rider licence since
1963. How can anyone tell how much on-bike experience I've had since
then? All they can tell after the accident that killed me was that I'm
an older person who is riding a bike.

You didn't address my point with your example. I said:

"I suspect that any speed in a car above about 50km/h into an
immobile object and the outcome is essentially a lottery."

Your example is of a car becoming airborne and tumbling along the
road, NOT running "into an immobile object". If he had hit a tree his
car would have been cut in two lengthwise, and his survival would have
depended upon which side of the car absorbed the hit, and how fast it
was travelling at the moment of impact.

Will an "up-spec Mercedes or Volvo" stop prior to hitting the tree if
you're travelling at 200km/h? That's 55m/s. Is the sensor scanning
for objects 55m ahead of the car? Can its brakes take you from 200km/
h to a full stop in 1 second?

All the advanced technology in the car is still just a crutch if
you're a crap driver. It won't necessarily save you.

In WA, There is no requirement to display a P plate if you have had
any class of licence for more than two years.

Also, right hand turns through intersections tend to be across a varying
negative camber, whilst left turns tend to be (more) consistent positive
camber - another reason why right hand turns feel harder than left.
