I was invited to join at 40, but didn't see the point of joining a
local NSW club that had less than 20 members when I was going back to
    Perth within two months.

    Still haven't joined.

Sheesh! First Doug wants me to trash my Bimmer at 160 km/h, now you want
me to trash me Volvo too - at 200 km/h. Actually, you can't just do that
in a Volvo, you have to get permission first, takes 3 weeks - sending a
    message to Goteborg now.

The Offset Crash Test is conducted at 64 km/h and well designed modern
cars completely preserve the passenger compartment at that speed with no
or little firewall intrusion and no sleeving. The test does not take into
account the contribution from airbags. Most 4WD do very badly in this
    test.

Mercedes are working on a collision avoidance system that takes over the
steering as well as the braking, which means the car will dodge round
your immobile object if it possibly can, and if it can't it will present
the best angle of attack with respect to preserving the occupants.

An invisible hand comes out and yanks the steering wheel when you
    attempt to t-bone a cyclist/motorcyclist, eh?

    I owned a Blue GS100S and a GSX1100ED and a GSX1100ESD, all handled high
speed very poorly, going into a death wobble at anything over 180 kph.

A friend was a service manager at the dealer Mayfairs and they had lots of
    problems with these bikes.

I worked at a Honda dealer at the time (Cycle World) in Buranda Brisbane.

Great engines & gearboxes looking for a frame. (Lots of bikes at the time
    had the same problems.)

Just what everyone else on the road needs. A car designed to enforce
    selfishness.

I nearly made it into that group, I was 28 when I got my Ls (in the
    ACT).

If you look at the photos here[1], you can see that I was diligently
displaying my P-plates all the way around Australia in 2002. ;-)

Wotta good law-abiding citizen! (apart from the streak, of course *giggle*)
Geez, BTH, that must've been one heck of a trip. Would LOVE to do the same
(the trip, not the streak!), but it looks like there were rather a lot of
unsealed roads.... and you KNOW how much I love those unsealed roads!

They do make available cash subsidies towards the cost of riding courses
(or at least they did last time I checked).

The magazine makes mention of it (in an encouraging way) from time to time.

The local Ulysses group tends to ignore riding courses mostly and from
what I've seen the riders who least need the courses are the ones most
likely to do them (and vice versa).

Junior members don't get to use the gold trimmed logo, they have to use
    silver trim.

I owned a GS1000G at one point and I still have fond memories of that
bike. The forks would flex at levels that modern riders would scream
about but the basic handling was good I thought. In the sense that it
did what you asked in a manner that could be anticipated and reacted to
easily. Sure it could bite beyond it's limits (which weren't hugely
high) but what bike can't you say that about.

The XVS1100 that I have ridden OTOH has handling that can only be
described as inconsistent. It will react one way this time and another
way next time. I find that annoying (and probably somewhat unsafe).

I honestly believe that an XVS1100 wouldn't see which way a GS1000G (let
alone a GS1100S) went with equal riders on stock bikes through a set of
    twisties.

Yes. Although I think the system will detect a motorcyclist as an
obstacle, I suspect it doesn't treat a cyclist the same way - not enough
metal in a $10,000 carbon fibre pushie.

Designed by human beings. The car will attempt to preserve the occupants
(known humans) in preference to bystanders (unknown humans). If you have
a problem with that, you're trying to appky ethics to evolution.

You're not a descendent of Douglas Haig[1] by any chance are you? ;-)
