Crunch....

    Sunny Melbourne,[1]
    37º
    Hot asphalt goes soft
Well-Traveled Bimmer parked on City footpath[2]

Bimmer has a little lie down.

Thoughtfully breaks fall by landing on Saab.

    Crunch.

Saab: a tail light lens and a little paint.[3]

    Bimmer:
    smashed windscreen.
(yet another) paint chip on fairing.

.... and a rather alarming oil leak.
When I went to start the beast, it refused to turn over. Motor turned a
bit, then stopped, but not with the sort of clank you get when metal
bits obstruct progress. A little gentle coercion (rocking it backwards
and forwards in gear eventually freed it up, so I'm guessing I had a
hydraulic lock from fuel and/or oil accumulating in the combustion
chamber while it was having a little lie down.

I now have a rather alarming amount of oil emerging from somewhere near
the cylinder head. A late finish at work and an impending trip OS mean
    I haven't had a chance to have a good look, but I'm hoping it's
something simple like a blown head gasket (from the pressure of the
    hydraulic lock).
I'm guessing. Is it likely? Has anyone had this before?

There does not appear to be any damage to the head, and as far as I know
the head didn't touch the ground (thanks to the nice Saab)

    [1] strange but true

    [2] because we can

[3] with insurance claims, there is never any such thing as "a little
    paint"

  4. Compression test will reveal all.

Shoulda (in 20/20 hindsight) pulled plugs first. Been there, and done that.
Leak could be due to a number of things, so cheap, other expensive.

A little paint on this model is apparently enough to cover the rear half of
the car, according to the aus.motian who found and picked up your bike :)

    ??

First opportunity to check it in daylight reveals all. The LH rocker
cover has a fine crack on it's lower side.

    Easy replacement item.

And the Tang has broken off the centre stand. That could be a pig to
    replace properly.

    Rocker cover.
$200 for a new one at BMW
$100 for a 'fairly good one' at the wreckers
$75 + postage for a new one from motobins http://www.motobins.co.uk

I can wait the six days it takes to get here. I'll be away. If it
takes too long, mr silastic will see me through.

I do prefer to support local business, but not when the price difference
    is that high....

Nah, if it was a chalkie's car it would have been a 1978 Honda civic.
