Oh for ****'s sake, are you really that thick? WavyDavy's 10x10x10 is
essentially the definition of a litre, being 10^3. WC replied with a
2-dimensional description (notice you had to insert the 3rd dimension?)
which is clearly meaningless in this context. From your "explanation",
I suspect it would have to be a cuboid litre anyway, but I doubt that
saab measure their boot space by the number of litre-cube boxes you can
    fit in it.

Perhaps the fact I suggested M theory as a way of providing the extra
dimensions for Saab's cubic litres might imply that I understand enough
physics to grasp the concept of volumes?

The balloon has mass, and the gas inside it also has mass, so they will move
outwards. Because the density of the balloon+gas is less than that of the
surrounding air, it will also try to float upwards.

  4. Actually, there's a touch of truth in there. Not SAAB, but istr some
manufacturers used to do just that back yonks ago. They had a pile of
cu.ft boxes and lesser ones which they'd stack in the back.

  5. Depends if the passenger lobs his lit dog-end in the back, dunnit? No
    balloon, no problem.

Do you understand how flotation works?

If it's weightless I'm going to guess that it all depends on whether the
driver has the window open and what direction the breeze is coming from.

    This is completely untrue.

As anyone who's been chauffeured by Champ will attest.

Yes, yes, yes. We're not going to let reality get in the way of a cheap
    gag though, are we?

    Erm

But you don't understand enough English to realise that the first definition
of 'cubic' in the OED is 'shaped like a cube', and you haven't quite grasped
    the concept of humour.

Okay. The helium still has mass, just less that the equivalent volume of
surrounding air. So, in a car either at rest or moving at a constant speed
in a straight line, the bubble of helium would float upwards through the
    air.

Now, visualise a tank of water in the car. The car turns to the right, and
the water in the tank tilts to the left. Say the car is driving in a circle
at a constant speed: the angle of the surface of the water will be at right
angles to the resolution of the triangle of forces between acceleration due
to gravity and the centrifugal "force". A bubble in this tank of water
would rise (ignoring all other forces, eg Coriolis) along the line of the
resolution of the triangle of forces.

So, if the car is turning to the right, and the water is therefore tilted up
to the left, the bubble will rise from bottom left to top right.

The effect with a bubble of helium rising through the air in the car would
be the same, and the helium bubble would rise at the same angle, although
    more slowly.
