Custom motorcycle engine identification

    I've been in a brief discussion over on rec.moto about
    this custom motorcycle:

    Specifically, I'm trying to identify the engine. At first, I
    glanced at it and thought it was Ducati related. However,
    the closer I looked, I can see that it's very unique.

    My latest guess/conclusion is that it's simply(metaphor-
    ically speaking) the rear cylinder of a large Harley V-
    twin, configured as a single.

    Yeah, I know, it's hard to believe, but I can't think of
    anything else it could be. If so, why someone would
    choose this modification is well beyond me, other than
    to exhibit his certain talent for (re)fabrication.

    Any alternative ideas here on the engine construction?

    Well Gary, I know one thang, that little motorBike probably weighs about
    250 lbs. It looks like it is about 58inches long, and 26 inches to the
    top of the tank.

    No doubt it is all ''home made'', Engine and all. Now, I dont mean it
    aint a good job, by someone. I thinks it's cute.

    Maybe it's Buell Blast motor? Doesn't look like the one i have though.
    But that is basically what a blast uses as an engine, half a harley motor.

    Yeah, you're right the Buell here:

    does appear to have a similar configuration. However,
    the major difference is that the custom has a frontal
    intake, and rear exhaust. This Buell doesn't seem to
    look that way.

    Here's another Blast image that gives a somewhat bet-
    ter detail.

    The Blast also seems to be missing any pushrod tubes,
    but they could just be beneath that cover.

    If is wasn't for the intake/exhaust reversal, I'd say you're
    right. I suppose one(with enough patience/ability) could
    simply reverse the intake/exhaust. But, why?

    Take a rear head, put it on the front cylinder, and Bob's your uncle.

    Some customs do just that to run separate intake systems on each
    cylinder.

    The removal of the rear cylinder was done to meet engine size
    requirements for racing, I think.

    I understand(I think), but it seems there are a lot better
    ways to meet a requirement, with all the various engines
    available today.
