  1. yes, you're right, when I try to 'reply' rather than 'new post' it brings up
    a rejected addressee - haven't a clue why

I took it that splitting the crank was a job best left to someone who knew
what they were doing, hence local dealer.

Everything else (apart from one gearbox bearing) I have done myself - top
end etc, all parts were brand new from Dave Silvers

top-end sounds fine, it's just this damn last noise I can't pinpoint, I can
see the top end having to come off to check that big end, but if it's not
that then I really don't know what else to try.

Have had (and rebuilt successfully) more than half a dozen of these little
singles, and have never had so many problems with all previous bikes put
together as this motor. Thanks for suggestions though.

Damn.. you keep changing the subject, when you do that, it posts as a
    new thread.

I know I shouldn't follow up to my own posts, but...

I've just had another thought, my FZR250RR sounded like it had a big
knock somewhere in the bottom end. Turned out to be a worn clutch basket
where the plates ate slightly into the alloy.

Excellent, now you need to quote the bit of the post you're replying to
above where you're replying to it... or it's hard to keep track of
what's being replied to and in what context.

  8. really??...hmm, this is a high mileage motor (50,000), I know it's had some
work before, and though the clutch is light and works ok, it is worth
    thinking about.

Don't know if this is relevant, but when everything is in place and fully
tightened, but with the clutch cover off, it is possible to move the clutch
basket along the gearbox mainshaft very slightly.

I asked a local engineer if this is normal, he said not to worry about it,
and local dealer said there should be some movement to allow clutch end
play. Out of curiosity I did try shimming the basket to stop it moving, but
ended up with no free play at all in cable -- didn't try running the bike to
check the noise like this though.

Do you think it's worth shimming the basket to stop it moving, then
re-assembing without the clutch plates in place, just to see if noise goes
    away??

    Cheers for your advice,

    Rick

Could you quote the post like I'm doing please.. it's just the done
thing in this news group. I must be missing stuff out, because I don't
know exactly what you're replying to.
I think you may have found your clonk.
I wouldn't like to shim it too much, or it may cause problems when hot?
    I dunno..
If the primary drive is helical cut, then you will get some side thrust,
which may have the effect of causing the clutch basket bang from side to
side every time the cylinder fires.

I wouldn't know what was the normal thing to do on this engine.
