I see the list of the most dangerous roads in the UK is out again and it's no surprise at all to see the A537 Cat and Fiddle is Numero Uno again. Well, it is if you believe the BBC page on it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/10454356.stm This could be, it is alleged: http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/manchester/hi/people_and_places/newsid_87770 00/8777016.stm That 'bikers' are 'drawn' to the C&F, as some sort of challenge. Having been up and down it a few times, it is an interesting section of road, but I would hardly describe it as a challenge. The Highways Authority have been hard at it, making 'improvements': anti-skid surfacing, road markings and barriers ... and Police helicopter surveillance at weekends and now, average speed cameras. All this time, effort and money - and it is still the most dangerous road in Britain. Perhaps it is time for the powers-that-be to write it off and recognise that people of a certain mindset will hoon a road if they want to, and if they get it wrong, then things will get messy - but only for the hooner. There's no pedestrians on that road (that I've ever seen) and very few houses: so the only things at risk are sheep and walls and the odd motorcyclist. One item of concern, however: if the figures for motorcyclist are removed from the stats, then the top ten roads all disappear and the most dangerous road title falls to a section of the A18 SW of Grimsby which appears to be almost completely straight and flat, with three 90 degree corners at its Southern extremity. Quirkily, this section is not covered by Streetview - perhaps they've censored the trees festooned with blood and guts.
