Well, I had this plan of latching on to a ute blaring Lee Kernaghan real
loud out the wound-down windows and pacing it for a while...
That's pretty much spot-on, but we're saving that one, and others, for
    the two-day trip home.

  5. But I don't have a sound system or windows!

That's a good way from my place, Clem, but presumably the others will be
further west then that would make the backer way to Gloucester the go.
Distances are deceptive, as you know, on those roads. Shadow'll have to
    bring extra pain killers!

  8. Yeah, I know that road very well, thanks Daniel. We're just debating the
best way of getting there. Some of us rode down it last month and found out
why they call it Thunderbolts too!

    <snip>

I met Darren twice at PI. He seemed like a really nice bloke and I'm very
    sad at his death.

    RIP Boky

Yeah pretty old map unfortunatly its the best I had on short stick to put
online - The road from East Gresford to Dungog would be "Bingleburra Rd" I
think? if you reload the map Ive drawn it in there (in pretty pink) it comes
out just north of Dungog. (taken from my newer improveder map book I have)

Mhm, and an eye-catching pink it is, too.

If you've got any wisdom to share regarding that route, now's the time
and here's the place to do it. How much of a goat track is it?

Which leads me to think that whatever Boky hit (car or guardrail or anything else for that matter), it must have been in just the
wrong way. Any other angle and he'd still be alive.

  17. It's more valleys and foothills IK. It's narrow and bumpy (like all the
roads around here) rather than snowies twisty but you have less to dodge
    than me.

My guestimates, based on previous travels, stopping every 150-200k's for
fuel and not bearing in mind that large groups average a slower time would
    be...

Blacktown to Warwick via Putty and the boring way - 10.5 hrs
Blacktown to Warwick via F3 and Thunderbolts - 11 hrs
Blacktown to Warwick via Putty and Thunderbolts - 13 hrs

So, waddaya reckon? Meet you at Gloucester? No backtracking for you then...
I'm thinking a splitter group'll probably form at Singleton.
Itinerary, by my calcs, would be.

    1. McGraths Hill-Singleton, 180km, 2hrs (fuel, 20mins)
    2. Singleton-Gloucester, 131km, 1hr 30mins (fuel, 20mins)
    3. Gloucester-Walcha, 147km, 1hr 30mins (fuel, 20mins)
    4. Walcha-Glen Innes, 165km, 1hr 30mins (fuel, food, 45mins)
    5. Glen Innes-Tenterfield, 91km, 45mins (fuel for the peanut-tanked, 15mins)
    6. Tenterfield-Warwick, 112km, 1hr

    Total, 826km, 8hrs 15mins riding, 2hrs in breaks, 2hrs for Murphy

Say 12hrs 30mins. Pretty spot on, Pete.

Leaving at 6:30 and taking the last option gets us into Warwick at 7:00.
Just as the arvo heat is starting to die down. An hour to check in and
shower, and we're in the pub by 8:00. Just as the sky starts turning dark.

NB: Yes, doing this planning work_is_a coping mechanism for me.
