Bloke got killed coming up the range a few months ago. Bike was scarcely scratched. This tragic news is not how anyone should have to see out the year. I didn't know him, but in the playground of aus.moto, we are rarely more than one degree of separation from the best of mates. From all accounts he was a top bloke, and we are all the poorer for his passing. It just goes to show how tenuous is our grip on life via those two tiny rubber patches. Can't ask much more of life than that. Vale Boky. Gary
Very sorry to hear about this. Condolences. -- Cheers Dave (Mojo67) FZR600 >> ZX6R >> ZX9R Brisbane http://users.bigpond.net.au/mojo67/mojo67.htm I used to never be able to finish anything but now I
yup, he would have kicked us firmly. he stayed with us a few weeks back while he was in melbourne, not a nicer bloke you will find anywhere. top bloke, always was, always will be RIP Boky Marty
"Chris Coote" > Only ever rode once together...and not that long ago. Got the bad news while up in the Snowies and there were thoughts of packing up and going home :-( Then decided that Boky would kick us up the butt for it and made it a "ride-for-Boky". RIP, mate pete
There's nothing new for me to see that I don't see on any Sunday so it would be Clem's way to Gloucester for me but I don't mind nipping over to play tour guide from Singo. Damn splitters! The Peoples Front of Singlet? Shit, it looks longer now! The Putty-Gloucester bit is a push but the Walcha time is highly unlikely. GI-T will have to be limit +GST. As Clem said it gets darker earlier up north so we should make closing. Everyone copes in different ways but a ride sounds good!
IIRC (which is dubious) I think the Pat, Pisshead, JL freight train did Gloucester/Walcha last month in a touch under 2 hours, and I sure as hell wasn't doing the speed limit plus GST anywhere it was possible to get up it. JL
It took us a bit longer to do Walcha-Gloucester coming back though... (Even allowing for the noon departure from the pub) Postman Pat
Hmmmm, ok... where am I going wrong, though? From what I remember of the *one* time I did the Thunderbolts three and a half years ago now in the car, after Gloucester, you climb out of a valley, go up the side of a mountain for a bit, then it levels and straightens out, and remains like that all the way to Walcha. ~150km feels about right for the distance, too, from memory. You'd think knocking that over in an hour and a half wouldn't be asking for much; it only calls for a 100kph average. What was it, three weekends ago, three of us did a 720km loop up and down all the mountain passes on the South Coast; Brown Mountain, Mt Darragh, Mt Imlay, Clyde Mountain, in that order. Five stops; Cooma, Bombala, Eden, Batemans Bay, Braidwood. We weren't going completely brain-out, didn't rush our stops, and we got plenty held up by traffic between Bega and Tathra and between Moruya and Batemans Bay. We left at 8:30am and we were home by about 5:45pm. That should be a reasonable analogue of what we're planning for next Thursday...
The middle section after going up the mtn is a wide road and good seal from what I recall, but the last 30km towards Walcha were quite choppy and a much narrower road in general. This part may have been resurfaced since I last rode it (with Boky ;-) ), so please be careful. What for roo n wallabys n wombats too. Regards Bronnie
Yeah look your maths is right on paper, and I did say the efficiency of my recollection was dubious but I seem to recall it taking closer to 2 hrs (it may be further than you calc'd perhaps ?) Take with grain of salt... my memory disappeared along with my youth quite a while ago... JL
According to what's left of my GPS log, 2.5 hours on the way back so, theoretically speaking of course, 200+ and a bright sunny day would bring that average down a bit.
/me throws a dirt bike at shadow... nice little 600 Honda [1] Johno Beer mate? [1] we all know how much you love honda
Looking at it on the map, and comparing it to similarly squiggly lines On the same map, including, for example, the Goulburn-Oberon road which I know to be 161km, ~150km_does_seem realistic. In other words, should someone stumble across your good looks just laying on the ground someplace, you'd appreciate them having a look around in the vicinity, just in case those other two happen to be nearby.
I'll be on the Diversion... 200+ is purely a theoretical excersise on that bike with panniers on! G-S
