Do any of you lot use them? I know that this has been done to death in
the past, but what's the general feeling on using them now?

It's still a legal requirement to use them over here in France, but
apparently progress has been made to change the law.

My choice would be to ride with them on [1], as at least people see me,
when I filter through traffic, a bit better. I'm not too fussed that
it's harder for people to gauge my speed.

[1] Even if the law was changed.

I switch them on every time. Never used to bother when I was a lad, got
quite annoyed when people used to insist that I did. Must be getting old.

We don't have a choice, the lights come on when you start the bike.

Most of the new bikes have had the choice removed for a few years now.

  5. I have discovered that "Automatic Headlights On" can be bypassed on my
R1200RT by switching on the ignition, then pressing the "indicator
cancel" switch for five seconds, followed by pressing the right
indicator switch for five seconds. Hit the starter button and the
parking lights remain on, but not dipped beam. Switching the headlights
on requires the ignition to be switched off and the bike to be
    restarted normally.

    But why would you bother?

I always put them on, and I have the choice. I'm considering leaving
them on all the time as when I hit the starter the electrics appear
    to[1] turn off the lights.

[1] they go off, not just dim.

  9. Because I can? :)

Actually, there are times when, in the course of my work, I visit
certain establishments where drivers are requested to switch off their
headlights when approaching the security gates. It is reassuring to
have the ability to comply with this request. ;-)

I remember with my old Divvy, they were wired through the alarm. I
couldn't deactivate the alarm without turning the lights on. If I
turned the lights off, the alarm would activate (whilst riding too).

I suppose that this 'reminded' me to have the lights on all the time.

Hmm, that reminds me. With Eurotunnel, they ask you to turn your
headlights off when approaching the train. I don't know if this is the
same rule for bikes, as they're asking you to break the law, in effect.

I never bother to turn mine off.

Although I did notice it was a bit dark when I was coming home the other
night and the next day realised I had been riding on parking lights.

  14. With Eurotunnel it is a convention which can be ignored. The sort of
"request" to which I refer sits more in the category of "an offer one
    cannot refuse"... ;-)

    Always use them now.
I flip to full beam when filtering :)
Can't see that, I would have thought it was easier for them to work that
out, as now the blind fuckers can see you ! :)
