Daytona 955i instrument panel

The clocks on my Daytona have always been a bit dodgy - missing bars
from the LCD, unreadable temperature gauge, malfunctioning trip meter -
but until last week they did at least tell me the speed.

    They don't any more.

After picking it up from its MOT I went for a celebratory spin around
Essex, and at some point en route the speedo went completely tits up. It
now just displays a series of random numbers.

I suspect it may not have passed the MOT if this had happened on the way
    there...

Several questions arise from this state of affairs :

    - would any kind soul out there care to tell me what the rev reading at
    30 and 40 in 2nd gear is ?

    - is this likely to be a development of the existing problem or a new
failure ? What else should I check ?

    - replacement units from Triumph are £700, which is non-starter. I've
thought about fitting an aftermarket unit (like the Trail-Tech Vapor
which would cost around £140 with the idiot light surround) but I
suspect that this will be a technical challenge (wiring / mounting
bracket etc) - anyone done it or something similar ?

    - I spoke to Triumph-ant who specialise in breaking Triumphs. He reckons
these are quite rare in undamaged condition, which sounds plausible. He
thinks he gets a functioning instrument panel in every six months or so
and that they go for £200. He hasn't got one at the moment but does have
the unit from a Daytona 600 which he says would plug straight in - the
only differences would be where the redline is printed and the absence
of a specific 955i graphic. I'm sceptical - would anyone care to comment
    ?

I've fitted a couple of Sigma bicycle speedometers to motorbikes,
they work very well up to 186mph or 300km/hr[1], have large enough
digits to be easily readable, with a trip meter, odometer, max speed,
average speed, and clock function. Piece of piss to fit, but of
course have no lighting. But I've heard tell there are such things
as LED lamps that work off 12V and if you're determined, or have a
friend with some electrical nous, it should be the work of only a
couple of hours to molish some sort of bracket and wire it up to a
switched power source on the bike.

[1] claimed on the specs, never tested by me

It would, speedo's not part of the MOT.
Given my experience with that lot, I'd avoid like the plague. Give
    Trevor at http://www.triumphparts.gbr.cc/ a call.

Why not? Speedo's not tested in the MOT afaik.

Construction & Use regs demand a functioning one, though.

For mopeds/under 50cc they had to function "if fitted" IIRC. When the
speedo cable broke on my Fizzie, I removed the entire speedo so as to
(cleverly, I thought) stay within the law.

I was the only one in my peer group to take a moped test and so could
carry a pillion which at least once resulted in a pull by local plod. He
wasn't too impressed by the lack of speedo and threatened to do me for
    it. Never did though.

    <snip>

Buy a used Daytona, transplant the clocks, and flog the rest of it as
    spares.

If it's showing random (whole)numbers, doesn't that indicate the
sender's fucked. My Triple did the whole 'numbers totally unrelated to
actual speed thing' when the optical encoder wheel (IIRC) broke up.

They're the bunch who were trying to fit one of the 147bhp Daytona
engines to the Tiger. Weeks turned into months, lots of excuses, then
when I told them I was going to do a chargeback through the card
company to get my 500 quid deposit back (because the 6 month cut-off
was looming), they said the mechanic had been badly burnt in a workshop
fire, & they couldn't do the conversion after all as the airbox
    wouldn't fit.

I did wonder if that was the case - but I wasn't sure of the terminology.

It might be a lot cheaper to fix that and at least get back to where I
was before than try to replace the whole dash...

    Ta !

If that's what it is, it will be *much* cheaper.
De nada. I could be very well wrong, given that no one else has
mentioned it, but if the symptoms fit....
