"This will be my last word on the subject."

I didn't think it would be, somehow.

A certain Aberystwyth academic received unwelcome attention from
his employer over a feline-related post, though it was in reeky,
    not UKRM IIRC.

I think I remember now, the guy's name was Mark Hitchin. He'd been
frogging a couple of other real posters to the newsgroup, and someone
(might have been Trevor or Simes) reported him to his employer, who
didn't see the funny side. This would have been around 1999 or so.

Strictly speaking, I was referring to _another_ case.

Reporting someone to his employer is a bit sick, really. Personally,
I'd only do it if the person's posts were illegal in some way.

The guy was faking up his headers so as his posts appeared to come
from other regular posters to the group and making defamatory remarks
about yet other regulars. It's the sort of thing that I think most
right-thinking people would agree as "not on".

Must be something in the water... I was thinking of another
geezer, a wood-louse fancier of some renown.

I wouldn't oppose that view. I think the 'faking' of headers wouldn't have
pushed me to respond, as none of us really has 'copyright' on the posting
addresses or names that we use here (although faking an e-mail address
might be construed as some sort of 'identity theft' (which is why I use
'invented' addresses when I 'morph')), but the defamation bit would have
    got a reaction, yes.

But for clearly _illegal_ acts (incitement to violence, anti-Semitism (here
in France, such expressions are unlawful), pædophilia ..), I wouldn't
    hesitate.

  10. The one I remember who really *did* get his come-uppance was Dr Death,
alias Michael Zamkowicz, who posted the pictures of my daughter to the
    kiddie porn ngs...

If it does, so be it. This isn't something I'm taking lightly, despite
my initial comments being in that vein.

I've not commented until now. Unless circumstances change this will be
my only public comment on the matter. I'm happy to clarify issues via
    email or face to face.

It's a very strange situation to be in. My initial post was a knee
jerk reaction to him saying 'report me'. Then when I received copies
of newsgroup posts he had made soliciting pen pals from teen and pre
teen children I grew more concerned.

If he was a teacher in the UK I would legally be obliged to report my
concerns. What I've sought guidance on is whether someone who posts
pictures of their gentials, faeces, pupil's work and makes eye brow
raising comments about teenage girls should be investigated.

My colleagues' view is that any LA in the UK would suspend then sack
him for gross misconduct and that he is extremely naive to post as he
    has.

I've discussed what to do and the jury is still out and I'm seeking
further advice. I will state now that if he ever returns to the UK and
seeks employment with children I will report my concerns as if I do
not then I could be liable under law. [1] This much has been
clarified. The issue now lies in the area of personal ethics. Those of
you who know me as a person rather than my usenet persona know that
this is something I take very seriously indeed.
I'm surprised how many people have taken this seriously.

[1] Liability will only arise if the action breaches the duty of care
and causes a loss or harm to the individual which would have been
reasonably foreseeable in all the facts and circumstances of the case.

  14. Really?

Er, that's a horse of a different colour. If they're genuine, of course.

  15. Oh, he did more than that. He forged a posting from my wife, alleging
that I'd been touching her up in the bath. He included name, address and
telephone number, but being a clueless twat, managed to point the finger
at someone else with the same name as myself, who was less than
impressed at the hate phone calls he started receiving.

Like I say, he was done like a kipper for it.

  18. And what makes you think they're genuine? Des, pita though he may be
here, has many more real enemies on that other kooky ng, one or two of
which would quite happily frog him in such postings.
    I'm unconvinced.

  20. If you have the proof, bring it out into the light and post the
references to the postings in question.
