....I have thought about this, and though some part of me says it's a bad
idea, nearly every other bit of me screams YES!

So. With a budget of £3.5k, could one acquire a reasonable, um, Blade.

    *grin*

I know I want it. I love it.

On the same subject, what do you reckon the best time of year to do a part
ex is going to be this year.

There is of course beer/wine offered for sage advice. Too often are you
    asked and nothing offered.

    Cheers flower.

I think I would be a little wary of buying a bike off ebay. Unless it was
    a SOB level purchase.

    Never.

You'll always get a better deal selling your bike privately then going
to buy the new one waving cold hard cash.

So equally the bike shop may not want to, or will give you a nominal
couple of hundred quid for it.

In which case, why not just keep it and use it for track days?

I am assuming the auction works the same way? Bid then win then buy, or get
    a bad rating from seller?
would not want to commit to buy without seeing etc.

It's bad, but not that bad,

A little tender care for a few days and it'll be spic(k) and span.
Should have new SS downpipes soon if all goes according to plan.

Piece of piss. I just sold a mint 98 with only 8000 miles on the clock.
    for £3200.
I sold it through Ebay. ie the buyer Emailed me, came and looked at it
and offered the buy it now price on the spot. Mine was a UK spec import
    though.

    It's true. I could have bought a brand new un-registered 9R for £5995
from Sutton Motorcycles. I bet they'd by negotiable on it as they had
a few in the showroom. The blue one even looks quite good.

I've bought a bike of ebay and would do so again.

Look at the vendors feedback comments (make sure the feedback isn't all
recent and low value stuff). Go and see the bike if you're interested
enough. And as Daz says pay in cash- if it's not as advertised then you
can always turn it down. I don't think under these circumstances it is
any more risky than a normal private sale- I'd suggest it was less.

You'll be fine. I sold my Y2K blade with 12k on the clock through Ebay
for ?3,750 not too long ago so I reckon you could get a fairly recent
one with 3 and a half grand to spend.

As per others' comments I'd keep an eye on Ebay IIWY.
