I know, I'd like to remain optimistic at the very least.

I got snapped on the road back to Calais, grey and low, not orange and high.
I'd just seen the sign and was looking around like an idiot.

I assume they are *only* forward facing? the flash went off as I approached
    it.

It was, but a true artist never lets facts stand in the way of his
    ignorance ...

No, quite a few of the recent ones are rear-facing. And grey and low.
But AFAIAA they still don't attempt to trace foreigners.

As Ace said, there is a mixture of both. They tend to be grey with a
black/yellow tape around parts of it to make it more visible.

Funnily enough, some of them are 'double faced' with the radar/camera
facing to the back and the front, whereas quite a lot are single faced
only. I don't think that many of the double faced ones operate in both
    directions, if at all.

There was an issue with these new digital gatsos when they first came
in, for those that took photos from the rear as it was a new principle
for the French to not have a picture with both the numberplate AND the
drivers face. A second issue that they had to overcome was data
protection, because it's all digital. IIRC the data from the cameras
    has to be encrypted.

In other towns, such as Lyon, the cameras are much smaller and rounded
than the "standard" ones in Paris. Quite stylish, actually.
