Stuff like brake calipers & discs that are scuzzy, what do the FOAK use?

Try WD40 & a stiff brush first then (obviously avoiding the seals).

Is this your way of announcing you've bought something?

  11. parrafin and a small brass wire brush avioding the seals etc

Then copious amounts of brake cleaner

Decent jet wash with degeasing detergent again cover seals and rubber
    hoses

    Or, the easier version.

    Parafin & toothbrush.

Then neat washing up liquid (and a different toothbrush)

Then just hose the bike down.

or the easiest version: put the bike in the garage and forget about it. It
    will only get dirty again.

A Dremel equivalent with speed control, and a small rotary brass brush
    with some ACF50.

For a sensible answer, only use it for the bits that you can't see. I
used baby wipes on my scooters 4 pot caliper, that's anodized silver and
    it came up pretty good.
