I have to put in an effort to not see this as complete madness on the
part of the parents. If there's something that should be drummed into
kids' heads, it's that tarmac is for vehicles, footpaths and grass
verges are for people, and no PlayStation for a week if you get the two
    confused.

Fair enough, where I grew up, among multi-storey apartment buildings,
you could walk, run or ride your pushbike for well over a kilometre and
not come anywhere near a roadway, places to play were probably in less
of a short supply than in Aussie suburbia, 2006, but, still...

....have to wonder if letting kids play cricket on the street doesn't act
as a seed for the formation of a lackadaisical attitude to traffic later
    in life.

Im glad you agree that im not responsible for the actions of your kids.

When I first got my licence where were 60km, 80km 100km and 110km zones,
when I was a kid that streach of road would have at least been a 60km zone,
since then the road has been resealed and ABS brakes invented.

Maybe you should read some other posts in this thread.

  6. Time for you to learn that kids run into the street and you better look
    for them.

Streets are not supposed to be cleared of kids so your car is safe to
    speed in them.

So, instead of getting done for 36kph over the limit, you would've got
done for 26kph over the limit...
You have ABS on your R6?
Maybe you should **** off back to Auburn Maccas carpark.

Time for you to learn that spouting random sanctimony doesn't constitute
a response to a stated position.
I would disagree. Being so small and light, children don't do much
damage to what might hit them... ergo, their presence or absence on or
near a road makes next to no difference to how safe it might be for a
    vehicle to speed through there.

  11. 100% correct - you are not responsible for someone else's actions.

However, you have a duty of care. This duty of care may well be shared
with others, but it does NOT absolve you of all responsibility.

And please remember one of the things that you were supposed to learn
when you did went for your driver's licence - vehicles give way to
    pedestrians.

Every time they 'upgrade' a road near where I live, they make it wider,
smoother, and with a minimum 1 metre hard shoulder. When they finally finish
working on it and it gets reopened it invariably has a speed limit 10 km/h
    less than previous.

Are they making these roads more dangerous?

Aren't they ? Pray tell why not ?

Last time I looked the government was spending a lot of money trying to
educate kids to NOT run onto the road without looking for traffic, were
    they mistaken ?

Roads are for vehicles. Parks are for kids to play in. If your suburb
doesn't have any parks beat the shit out of your council.

Errm you might want to have a re-read of your traffic regs there Peter.
