Last place I lived was down a lane by a sharp bend.
It was a bit of a school-run/commuter rat-run so we can imagine the sort
of vehicles and the sort of twats driving them, some of whom think that
hooting at every corner clears the road magically.
    Very annoying and dangerous behaviour.

They're wrong anyway; if they want to be pedantice they could say that
it's not possible to exceed something bya multiple, but any reasonable
interpretation would agree with your intended meaning.

Hhmm, could be a good plan.
Cos, if they take the front of the house out [1] maybe I could the
    decorating done for free ;o)

[1] I have no front garden, not even a footpath in front of my place just
    straight into the road!

speaking of which, does one exceed the speed limit by two times, or exceed
    it by twice?

    one for the pedants there.

Yep that's the sort of thing here. Although a 'B' road, it is the rat run to
local rail station. Also all the bloody school buses stop right outside my
    front door!
I even get people knocking on the door late at night [1] to ask directions
as it's a funny junction. They normally get a polite, **** Right Off!

[1] Even the plod and fire service have knocked on my door asking for
    directions.

    Yes I did say 3 times. 3 x 30 = 90 3 x 40 = 120
Of course 3 x 70 = 210 which is where Dodger gets me, there is an NSL
motorway not far from here and it's still deffo urban.
    I need a faster bike.

Both, but only the latter doesn't need 'by'. 'twice' is an adverb, and 'by
two times' is (I'll translate directly from the French, 'cos I don't how to
say this in English) a 'circumstantial complement'. So no preposition is
needed in the first example. Note that when 'two times' is attributive, it
    is written 'two-time' or 'two-times'.
Oh, I should have sat it out, then.

    I ignore them.

I did think the cop on the IoM was exhibiting a good deal of common
sense when he said you could be done for crossing double whites but if
you were already on the wrong side of them it didn't matter.

So, if you exceed a 30mph limit by one time the limit, how fast are
    you going?

There's a great deal of things that IoM coppers seem to have the right
    end of the stick on.

The butt lacks a slight step, the back sight is way too high and the
back of the receiver is too rounded.

Of course, I could just be being picky.

  19. Close enough, though.
I suspect the flagmakers of Mozambique know exactly what one looks like
and if they have a memory lapse, they only have to glance over at the
    corner of the hut.
