Having your own nuclear subs is like having BUPA as an option if the
    NHS lets you down again.

Yeah but we could buy some SS27 type mobile land launchers from the Ruskies
for 100th of the cost. 20 would do spread around the countries with a 9000
    mile global reach. 10 x tactical Kt fission warheads. 3 x 1Mt and 3 x 25Mt
conventional fusion warheads. That leaves 4. Make them Gigaton class
    enhanced fusion planet killers.

I can't see what else you possibly need to look serious, in a "Don't push
    me" kind of way.

  7. Cunts. I wonder how many coppers are in that now.
Those bastards were banned in the 70s, time for it to happen again. I
don't recall any mention of a specific un-banning of them, I wonder if
    it was quietly dropped.

    1986 in fact.
It means if I wear a t-shirt saying "believing in gods makes you a
dangerous prat" then under Section 5, Para 1(b) I am committing an
offence if someone sees it in a place reasonably accessible by the
public and claims to be offended, i must remove or cover it or be
    arrested.

Did you not realise how low we have already sunk Paul?

Yea, 25 years doing military related stuff probably out-brags you anyway.

Most people greatly overestimate the cost of the Iraq war.

The real cost is the difference in the total military budget (which is
rather large regardless of activity) compared to keeping those troops at
home. This boils down to weaponry consumed, capital assets lost, and
assorted extra costs such as transport and supplies.

The actual increase in the military budget directly attributable to the
Iraq conflict is small in comparison to other commitments such as
Afghanistan, The Falklands, Bosnia and around a dozen other places that
    our forces are currently committed.

As of today the ongoing cost reduces to the price of keeping a small
force confined to Basra Airport compared to the cost of keeping the
same force at home. Not exactly expensive and it is politically
convenient for the current government to keep them there a while longer.
The Iraq war may not be popular, but it is not particularly expensive.

The social issues which David Cameron cites, OTOH, are a massive ongoing
non-productive cost to the national economy which is continually growing
and almost totally out of control. To make matters worse, the cost of
this mess is spread with little clarity across many departmental and
local government budgets including Social Security, Health, Drug
enforcement, Social housing, Policing, and local social services.
Labour has seriously dropped the ball on this one and something needs
    to be done.

Unfortunately, using the "Daily Mail" riposte pretty much undermines[1]
any good argument you put forward, IMO.

    mind for potential future use.

Rather higher than that, ended with heading up a major R&D facility.
Yebbut Afghanistan is not in the Middle East which cuts it out of the
original discussion. The original posting referred to an "illegal war
in the Middle East" which narrows the argument down to Iraq. If you
visited Afghanistan you are probably too young to remember some of
the more interesting conflicts such a Kenya.
I have never read that particular rag and I have little interest in
    reading newspapers.

well, the cynical part of me would suggest that if that's what they're
admitting to, it probably cost a lot more. Is that figure including
the funding for the likes of the Hutton Enquiry etc.?
averaging it out, a 10% saving/year would be nigh on impossible, IYAM.
that's a good point, of course.

That sounds remarkably like, 'I know more about the Middle East than you
do'. A pity that you know so little that you think the settlements are
    'illegal' when they're not.

    Heh.
