Even more depressing when you're writing out invitations and you remember
those who died, coz they were your real friends (or you wouldn't invite them
    eh?)

No.. Fewer people = fewer cards

*ding*. If you can count the "things" (people, cards, pages in a book etc)
it's fewer. If you can't count them (oil, water etc, it's less)

It's pretty depressing that explanations such as the above, are still
    necessary...

No it's not, it's just like life the workld over. Somethings are remembered
and some things are forgotten or never taught at all. In this case, I simply
remembered something I was taught and taught for no good reason.

Knowing (actually remembering) the above has never done me one ounce of
good, nor has it hurt me and I'm sure the same can be said for most others.

It depends on what you mean by 'good'. When I hear or read someone
whose command of elementary English is so woeful as to not know the
difference between 'its' and 'it's', or 'fewer' and 'less', my opinion
    of that person is lowered.

You no doubt couldn't give a flying **** what I think about you, but I
don't believe that I'm alone in considering precise, accurate expression
in one's native language to be a desirable goal.
