Does anyone know which are good and which to avoid?

Forget the 5* jobs, I'm thinking between Holiday Inn Excess, or
    Travelodge

    TIA

Of the cheaper chains I usually go for them in this order:

    Innkeepers Lodge
    Best Western
Etap (there's one on the A55 south of Derby @ £35 a night)
    Ibis
    Travelodge
    HI Express [1]
Premier - seem to have delusions of grandeur or are paying L Henry too much
as their rates are often higher than the likes of Marriot & Hilton.

That's mainly when I'm staying in Portsmouth but I use the principle
elsewhere. BW have come up with some excellent deals recently. Their hotels
tend to be old & a bit run down but represent good value.

If this is for the *OSM then there is a Travelodge in Ashburton now.

There's an independent hotel on Burton Road called the International. We,
greybeard, BGN & I, used it a while back. It was okay, nice breakfast, not
far from the centre, unlike most of the chain hotels.

As ever, check the discounts at Quidco. Some are offering 16%.

[1] use the parent website ICHotels as sometimes the local HI is cheaper
than HIExpress, as in Pompey earlier this month.

De Vere have a long-running offer where you can get rooms for 19 quid a
night - unfortunately it tends to be in random locations around the country
    but it's worth checking out.

Stayed here when we went up to the World Superbikes at Donnington last
    year.

It was dirt cheap as it was brand new at the time.

Clean, friendly, horrendously expensive restaurant and bar, but
opposite one of those horrendously cheap harvester type places which
was honest grub & good ale.

There is... and the price is silly, for that night. I'd rather go easy
on the pop and drive to Derby, for the difference.
    Looks good.
    Always do. ;-)

Bloody long way to drive though, all the way from Devon.

but your job is to provide entertainment by getting pissed and picking a
fight with at least one of the pseudo-intellectuals.

oh, and you might want to ping greybeard. He is looking for a hotel too. He
may share travel costs, or room costs if you are willing to share.
