At any speed on the KTM my eyeballs aren't to be trusted. The vibration-
induced blurred vision sees to that.

    Will do, ta.

The giveaway was that it only cut out when in gear with the clutch out,
but did it when both moving at speed and when trying to pull away from a
    standstill.

The engine braking almost threw me over the front the first time it cut
    out at speed.

Yes, it is. There are portions of the rev range that are smoother than
others. I took mine on the London (read Epsom) to Brighton veteran run
which is about 200 miles round trip. Mind you it did vibrate off the tax
    disc.

I took the rubber off my foot pegs so my feet didn't fall off them.

Actually made it much easier to ride, too.

    Oi!

TBF, the hillclimbing may have taken away the little bit of sense I had.

Anyway, I am indeed signed up for the Eeyore's group.

My RF900 sidestand switch had hissy fits which took me ages to
associate with bumpy roads. It turned out that the sidestand return
springs had weakened and would allow the sidestand to drop /just far
enough/ to activate the cutout when hitting a bump at speed. It was
only a real issue on mid-bend bumps but it caused a few pucker moments
especially on the corrugated lanes round here, multiplied in
    surface-dressing season.

It was more of an issue when riding in company and led to one very
quick outing at dusk, when a quickish lad on a TL1000 took issue with
the repeated killswitch backire-alikes kept punching him in the chest
and bathed his fairing in lurid flames. He really wanted to get past
me, but of course that just fuelled the adrenaline-powered throttle
twisting on my part. We ended up so far ahead of the rest that we had
to stop for a pint and let the rest catch up.

That led to a serious investigation with no resolution, as there was
only a single wire to the switch and disconnecting it cut the ignition
completely. A cable tie around the switch plunger similarly failed as
it would fall off when riding and allow the symptoms to resume. It
did, however, point the finger directly at the source of the problem,
as it disappeared when the tie was in place.

The eventual solution was everso simple - two pairs of pliers and bend
a dogleg in the straight legs of the springs. It was such a joy to
ride, afterwards, without the coming and going over bumps - right up
until the dropping out of second gear issue became a frequent
companion, which led to some mighty impressive wheelies when powering
out of a second gear corner and it would drop out, then almost
instantly drop back in, just allowing the revs to hit the red line in
    between.

There's more puckers on the seat of that fucking bike than enough, I
tell you. That's why it's still under a tarp in the back garden 20
metres away from the replacement engine.
