Interesting article in today's Torygraph. The family of some poor bastard who dies after binning on diesel have won a settlement from the "uninsured motorists" fund. Looks like there's scope there for future claims where diesel is spilled and causes accidents. -- Wicked Uncle Nigel - "He's hopeless, but he's honest" WS* GHPOTHUF#24 APOSTLE#14 DLC#1 COFF#20 BOTAFOT#150 HYPO#0(KoTL) IbW#41 SBS#39 OMF#6 Enfield 500 Curry House Racer "The Basmati Rice Burner", Honda GL1000K2 (Fallen apart) Suzuki TS250 "The Africa Single" Norton 850 Commando Kawasaki GTR1400

and there's me thinking it was the arc described by his rear wheel as it lost traction, followed promptly by "the flying W".
Sucking his keyboard for inspiration, Nige typed: Di got a Focus 1.6 petrol earlier this year, and for the first 2000 miles it was returning something like 23 mpg. I asked the dealer and he said that they don't bed in until about 5000, so if I wanted to complain, come back then. I thought that was just so much salesman bullshit but, to be fair, it's getting better (3000 ~25/26 mpg). It looks like modern Ford petrols aren't the best for economy. The Mondeo turbodiesel does roughly twice the miles per gallon, compared to the Focus. If we want a cheap journey, we go in the big car. Duh.
If they're going, they went before now. It was in June this year that the "claimable allowance" from the MIB began to include clothing and personal effects, but it's been possible to claim for injury for quite some time. I think the one WUN mentioned is about a rider who was killed and I believe it's a first for someone to manage claiming successfully for a death through the MIB. -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
Unlike all those that went before? Fords have NEVER been economical on juice. The Mondeo turbodiesel does roughly twice the It's a diesel though, so "apples and pears" -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19

On an ST note, isn't 225bhp really, really, really fucking gay for a hot hatch these days? I mean, the A3/LCR was putting out that much with a smaller engine 5 years ago, and the current models make 250/240 respectively. And, best of all, they don't have Ford badges on the front.
Trouble is, anything more than 225 bhp (or thereabouts) is wasted on a FWD hot-hatch platform.
The A3/S3 has Haldex 4WD. The current LCR is, I have to agree, just plain silly (ob recent Astra VXR thread)
Sucking his keyboard for inspiration, Beav typed: True enough. Sure. I was just thinking along the lines of what was needed to get the job done. Given its poor fuel economy, the *only* advantage of the Focus to us is that it is physically smaller, and therefore easier to park. On every other measure, from load capacity to fuel economy, the Mondeo is by far the better bet. When other manufacturers can produce small petrol cars that will achieve well over 50mpg, I'm wondering what Ford are up to.
Not to mention the cases where an off is the result of some **** tipping half his load of gravel out of the back of his truck halfway round a bend too. Btw Uncle, I got yer tins yesterday and very good nick they're in too. -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
My missus has an 1800cc Focus (her choice) and it's a thirsty fucker compared to my VERY old SO Honda and it's also bloody useless for carting stuff about. I'll never understand why she wanted it in the first place, but there's no point in saying owt, coz wimmin never change their minds about important things I couldn't believe the amount of space there is in a Mongeo estate until I used my pal's to bring kitchen worktops from the shop. It's been called into service many times since then. Dog slow though, even the turbo version. -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
I wouldn't describe anything with 4WD as a "hot hatch"; I know that sounds daft, coz it's hot, and has a hatchback, but to me it's more like a racing version, a-la the 323 GT-R 4WD; to be a hot hatch it has to be a) fairly affordable (relatively) and b) have FWD. The VXR does a wonderful job of proving that pure power is ****-all use unless you can get it onto the road without excessive drama, but sadly the muppets that buy that sort of thing are, all too often, only interested in peak power figures.
Yeah, a bit like those who tout their on-board sound systems as having 4000wats of music output. Maybe, but what's a watt when it's PMP (or whatever) and not RMS. -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
Sucking his keyboard for inspiration, Beav typed: Mine's the 130 bhp TDCi, and it's torquey and usefully quick IRL. (Last car was a diesel Discovery automatic, so a tuk-tuk would probably impress me with its raw performance after that, I suppose.)
I suspect there was something amiss with my pal's. Even a non turbo should've been gruntier than his. -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
I was only getting 19-20mpg for the first couple of tankfulls, now getting 25-26[1] Not sure how much is due to the engine loosening-up, though still only done 1,200 miles, and how much is down to a change in driving style. These days I find myself short-shifting and riding the wave of torque to "make good progress" rather than revving out in the gears. Just why they gave it 6 gears is a mystery, probably explained by marketing rather than engineering, unlike to the Fiesta ST that's just screaming-out (literally) for a 6th gear. [1] still a shocker after the 42-46mpg from the 2.2TDCi in the X-Type and the Mondeo before that.
