Dilemma

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by andy broadhurst, Aug 31, 2005.

  1. I'm just about to move house. The new house is close enought to work
to be able to cycle in every day. Now at pressent i use the motorbike
which is good because it saves about 20 minutes each way on the commute
from Burton upon Trent to Derby, in a car it's hopeless with shit
    traffic all the way.

I used to go out with my mates quite a lot at weekends and in the
evenings for some good runs but over the past couple of months i seem
to have lost the hunger for bollocking about at warp speed. I still
enjoy the ride to work and the odd occasions i do go out but these are
    getting less and less frequent.

The bike i have at the moment is a ZX9R C1 which is the dogs bollocks.
It's such a bloody waste just using it to commute and have a very
occasional blast out at the weekend, so here is my dilemma, do i,

    1 - Keep the 9R

2 - sell it and get something smaller and commuting frienly

    or

3 - Sell it and wait for the hunger to come back then buy something new.

This has been bugging me for a couple of weeks now, i have know idea
    what i should do !!

The usual mixture of advice and bollocks would be much appriciated.

    Ta

Option 2 - kinda. Sell it & get something else completely different,
like a big trailee or supermoto, & spend your play time on the shitty
little roads that are no fun at all on a 9R. A change is as good as a
    rest & all.

Or bigger. How tall are you?

I have a Guzzi Quota coming up for sale soon, if you fancy good handling and
fully floating Brembos on a big Traillee. Fuel injected with upgrade chip
    too.

If you don't need the money, keep it for those times when you're pissed off/
stressed and just need to go out for an hour.
That's what I missed the most about not having a road bike.

I've decided that I'm not going to sell another bike, I'm just going to
    build bigger storage for them.
I really wish I'd kept the TRX and the Fireblade and the CR250.

  10. I have been thinking along those lines. i don't need the money but
having to keep it taxed, insured and unused in the garage is the bit
    thats bugging me.

I used to do what you said quite alot, **** off out for an hour or two
when i was stressed or pissed off. This might sound wierd but i just
don't seem to get in that state any more. May be i'm mellowing with
age, i don't know, but i just don't get that stressed.

Thats the problem for me, i used to use it for stress relief, i used
to count the days to the weekend and i'd be of riding like a loon all
day, i just don't feel like that any more.

Don't get me wrong i still think bikes are the best thing since sliced
bread. I still watch racing on tv and go to race meets, i even help my
mate set up his race bike. i went to the IOM for TT week this year for
the 3rd time and had a fucking brilliant time but when i came back this
time i knew i wouldn't go again, it was a strange feeling.

May be it's just a passing phase, but i just don't know.

well, you did saw "smaller is the way to go..."

For a serious suggestion, try a supermoto, though don't waste your
time fannying around with anything less than 500 cc or so.

    no - since riding SimonK's DRz400-powered CCM 404 (or whatever it's
called) I decided they're too slow.

They're over-endowed in the stroke department to the value of two.

well, we're talking supermotos here rather than actual dirt bikes, but
I thought even in the dirtbike world, there's a general move to 4T
    machines?

    Certainly I wouldn't want a 2T mostly-road-going supermoto.

There is, largely due to the septic's emmissions regs.
I'd rather have a 2T than a 4T if it was based on a competition
off-roader. Pre-mixing can be a chore, but it's much easier to rebuild
the engine, & the modern 4Ts like the CRF have a recommended piston
life of less than 20 hours - in fact con-rod too on the CRF iirc.

My top choice would be my mate's 110bhp CR500 - totally bonkers. You're
right though, something like a DRZ would make a much better commuter,
but supermotos should be kept strictly for playtime imo, & a manic
smoker is about as fun as it gets.
