If (for the sake of argument) one was looking to dip ones toe into the
murky world of green laning without blowing a large wedge, where would
the discerning off road pikey invest their hard earned:
Army surplus Armstrong, HD or Can Am
Kawasaki KMX, KLX, KDX or other KHI alphabet soup
    CCM rebadged chunky tat
    Yamaha YZF, XT or DT
    Or, when all else fails...
A good old Honda CRM, CRF or XL
All views welcome, especially being nested for being a ****...

Define not blowing a large wedge.

I'd also have a good look at how many green lanes you've got in the
area then work out how far you might have to ride the bike to get to
the start of any decent ones. That might help in your decision making
    process.

  4. Depends whether you intend to ride some distance on the roads to
aforesaid green lanes, or have a trailer to tote the bikes there. A
250cc stroker will be fun on the dirt, but quite possibly a right pain
    on a 50-mile road run.

As ever, I'll come out for the Yamaha XT600E which is just one of the
best cheap basc dual-purpose bikes ever built.

And remember - most used two-stroke dirt bikes will be knackered.
Anything that's been used on the dirt will have been crashed. And every
dirt bike is a scrote magnet, so invest in a decent lock.

I'd go as far as saying buy the FOAD chain and lock before you pick
    up the scrote magnet.

Yamaha XT's seem cheap enough, but I was thinking of something no bigger
    than 250cc to start with

Up to a grand. Road riding distances aren't really an issue due to
associates with large vans, and the Volvo has a tow bar.

  9. Cheap,
    reliable,
    dirt bike

Pick any two of the above :)

a 250 4T would be a good place to start. Make sure it's got an
electric start if you haven't been off road before. Think about seat
hieght - if you are shorter of leg, then the amount of dabs you'll
need will surprise you, so don't go for anythng to high.

I don't think you'l get a good Yamaha Serrow for a grand but might be
worth looking roiund - nice ntro into green laning, low seat etc.
Before long you'll be going all orange with a EXC 450 :)

Oh and my 950SE is not for sale.....

    cheers

Pretty much. A CRM or 250 4T. Green laning in this country invariably
involves picking your bike up off the ground several times a day,
dragging it out of (& across) bogs, & man-handling it over boulders. So
ignore anyone suggesting XT600s & Armstrongs unless you want to put
yourself off as quickly as possible.

    What the man says.
Even a little DT125/KMX125 is adequate for most places you can get to
legally. Bloody sight easier to pick up too!

Actually, I've been looking for a decent Serow on ebay for some months
now, but they come up rarely, and are quite pricey for old bikes.

Green lane use the bike still needs to be taxed & insured & roadworthy etc.

Try a Yamaha TT250R (note below!), you should be able to pick a decent one
up for maximum £1200, it has a leccy start, pretty reliable, only moans seem
to be seat height (quite tall) & small fuel tank (although you can get a
    bigger Enduro tank).

Although it was an import only (the early ones - primarily white, the much
later blue ones are a LOT DEARER), parts are readily available, with a few
forums & plenty information available on the interweb thingy.

Yeah, I know that, I was more thinking of getting the thing to the green
lane without having to ride it miles on Tarmac.
