Disposal of old / worn out motorcycle helmets

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Paul Corfield, Mar 24, 2006.

  1. Is there a sensible way of getting rid of old / damaged motorcycle
helmets other than chucking them in the bin for the council to take away
with the rubbish? Somehow it doesn't seem like the "right" way to get
    rid of them.

    Ebay.

The more sensible answer is that if I dump an old crash helmet I
either make sure it can't be used again or put it in the skip at work
where it'll end up in a compactor. Council tips aren't a good idea
because the pikey fuckers that run the places will probably sell it
    on.

used helmet of unknown provenance will remove themselves from the gene
    pool.

I'm struggling to see the downside.

I gave mine[1] to the local ambulance station for them to use to practice
getting them off dummies etc. They were grateful as th eone they had was
    about 10 years old.

[1] it was the one I was weraing for FBOTY#2003 that was banged and I got
paid out for. It was actually only 12 months old.

  7. Last one I disposed of, I chucked it on the fire.

    Chimney caught fire, too.

I'd guess that it's most likely a stupid 16 y/o kid would buy it and
use it when he takes his mates on the back. Those unwary friends of
his might not actually be that stupid until they land on their head
and that knackered old crash helmet splits as soon as it hits the
    ground.

  13. I tried that with one of my previous helmets - it's very very
    difficult..

A 4lb lump hammer and cold chisel did it in the end.
