Surprised this horror story about DK Motorcycles selling a 17 year old a
cut n shut (if that term is used for bikes as well as cars) bike never
made it here (seems to have made it everywhere else). So much interest
even MCN couldn't keep ignoring it (despite DK being a big EMAP
    advertiser).

Would you believe it, a copper got involved and actually helped the poor
lad. So they're not all bad.

    Anyway, basically a smashed/repaired 2002 GS500 sold with 1996 GS frame
re-stamped (very poorly) with the 2002 frame number.

  3. May be because its all "He said, she said" and therefore not all it
seems....? Maybe a newbie fucked up a tad and it all got out of
    proportion...

    And if MCN got involved.........

I've not read the links you posted but horror stories abound as far as

Hmm, OK, I read that the frame was not stolen. How do they know when
the original number was ground off and a new number stamped on top?

Just spent 1 1/2 hours reading the thread and all the links...

for the benefit of those that don't want to:-

DK sold a young lad a trade in bitza bike as an '02 when it should have been
    SVA'd as a Q Plate
(bike looked well dodgy with non matching numbers and mismatched frame,
    panels, tank etc)

Young lad posts on forum, 50,000ish ppl read the thread and whinge at DK,
    MCN, BiKE et al

    Plod get involved

DK join thread and give standard apology and offer young lad almost all his
    money back -100 quid

DK Motorcycles make no new friends, make lots of non-purchasing enemies.

Personally, whenever I hear their name I will remember this saga as I'm sure
    many more will too.

  7. Bet they didn't wait a year to send the DVD out though... :)

Or are you waiting for your personalised invite to come out and try out our
    off-road stuff[1]?

    Dave

[1] The ukrm-wide "free" holiday offer will be appearing later this year,
hopefully, to approx 4-6 people who want to try out the local trails/our
hospitality etc but they'll have to get here on their own money....

What's really stupid is that for the sake of £200 (his money back, +
£100 by way of an apology) they'd have looked like they were trying to
do the right thing and it would have been forgotten in a short while.

Goes to show they're not just cunts, they're stupid greedy cunts.

What's even more stupid is that the spotty little turd was told what
to do right from the start but insisted on crying like a baby on more
and more forums. If he'd taken out a small claims action he'd have won
once it got to court or if DK had shat themselves and settled out of
    court.

Quite a tale of woe indeed.

However, reading it all through, as far as I can see the only contact the
lad had with DK over the issue was a phone call made by his father.
All the attention and mouth foaming on the various forums must have backed
    DK into a corner.

Surely, he should have gone back to them for a face to face before involving
plod / MCN / old uncle tom cobbley etc.

Mind you, DK have revealed themselves as total cunts in their offer to him,
and IMHO missed a real opportunity to come out of it looking less shady than
    they do now.

In the original thread the lad posted some pictures of the bike. One
was of the headstock and it was pretty obvious the original number had
been removed and another put on.

To an extent I believe DKs story about the original owner binning it
and fixing it on the cheap, he just omitted to mention he replaced the
frame with an older one and tried to hide it.

As far as the new owner goes, he should have checked the bike more
carefully. But I suppose we're all inexperienced at some point and
wouldn't have known what to look for so that's where DK have let him
    down.

What did he expect DK to do? They've offered to refund him the cost of
the bike but he wants them to pay for extras fitted afterwards, namely
the restrictor kit. Should they also pay him for any bike gear he
bought and might not use now because his experiences of bikes have
    been soured by one dealer?

If he'd got anything about him he'd have gone into the dealership and
sorted it straight away. A guy I worked with had a similar experience
with a well known dealer in Brackley when they sold him a VFR400 that
kept going tits up. The final straw was when I looked at it about two
weeks after the purchase and noticed the front discs were way below
the wear limit (1). They gave him a full refund (less any extras
purchased with the bike) after I rode down there with him and told the
sales manager that the RC45 on display would look sick if it fell onto
another bike after an angry customer kicked it. Similar action would
have resolved the matter in the header within a few minutes.

    (1) It was sold with 12 months MOT.

    Well no, obviously not.
However, this whole episode seems to have been a masterpiece of viral
marketing, so I would have expected them to have been a bit more generous in
their offer in an effort to negate some of the inevitable bad press and
    negativity towards them.
Heh, pretty much my thoughts. Had the twat gone straight back to DK and
made his point coherently I am sure a lot of the crap that ensued could have
been cut. Hoowever, having read some of the lad's postings to the GS500
forum, he would appear to have difficulty in using words of more than 2
    sylables.

I struggled through the posts on that forum and he came across as a
clueless twat. No way would I have given him his money back straight
away if I was a salesman at DK.

D&K have, shall we say, a certain reputation in any case. I wandered
around there on a regular basis when I lived up the road, and while
they always had a large stock of often interesting-looking bikes, they
    were always at uninteresting prices.

What did it for me was overhearing a conversation between a salesman
and a punter, which concluded with the punter taking an R1 on credit.
The credit agreement included the bike (and servicing for two years),
leathers, lid, boots and gloves - and fees for CBT and DAS. This was
not an isolated example, I understand.

An R1 makes an excellent first bike, at least according to the savants on
