Do speed camera detectors work in time?

    NIP today - 41 mph in a 30 - I think I know the stretch and I was obviously
    obeying a non-existant 40 limit. I take objection to points when it's a
mistake! (In fact they want to know who was driving, I've asked for a photo
to help my recall, will they send one?)

If I fit a mobile camera detector will it alert me before they have a fix?
    Are detectors legal?

    Links appreciated.

What you need is a copy of The Highway Code which details things like
speed limits and how you can make a judgement of what the speed limit
    around you should be.

    In
I have a "Snooper" radar/laser detector and the Camera POI on my Tom Tom GPS
    equipped mobile phone.

There are quite a few false alarms with the Snooper but I find they're a
good reminder to check the speed. Especially out in the countryside as NW
plod love to hide with mobile cameras etc, but also when in new areas where
    at times attention is stretched.

The GPS POI works great giving warnings of fixed sites with a configurable
    warning distance.

Nice post-editing there. But while I agree in principal, and
sympathise with the OP[1], I'd have to say
"Not knowing that you were 35% over the speed limit = driving without
due care and attention. I'm as guilty as anyone[2] but I don't try to
excuse it. When I get nicked I accept full responsibility for my own
    actions.

[1] Cos I got another one last week, on a downhill stretch of motorway
with a ludicrous 60kph limit due to roadworks nowhere near it.
[2] Actually, probably _much_ more guilty than most folk, even on
here. I must have 50 or more speeding convictions to my name.

  7. Depends if you're thinking about arbitrary speed limits or about other
more important things. The OP said he thought it was a 40 limit (ok,
guilty of not paying attention to speed limits - again not a safety
factor). I'm obviously assuming that the OP has some sense of what is an
    appropriate speed for the circumstances.

Yeah, yeah, whatever. As I say, I don't agree with, or pretend to
stick to, stupid speed limits. That wasn't the point of the post you
    chose to argue with though.

I've used Road Angels for years and would not be without one. £300 or
less will get you the Navigator 7000. Sat Nav plus camera detector.

Eatmorepies banged the rocks together and they said :
Yes, but read the small print before you buy. The cheapest ones only
alert you to the fixed camera sites. You need one that alerts you to
the fixed, mobile and laser sites, like wot I has just got.
Depends on what you mean by "detector".

There are devices that do detect radar and laser guns, these will very
shortly be illegal, and are pretty useless anyway, as it takes about
0.3 seconds for a laser to lock on and get a reading.

Then there are devices that use GPS to work out where you are, and have
the locations of static & mobile cameras (plus known "accident
blackspots", schools, toll roads, etc, etc) stored in them.

As the cameras are only ever "situated at accident blackspots", these
things are totally legal. If the police made them illegal they'd be
admitting the cameras were not sited at accident blackspots and all
    hell would break loose.

This is the model I have:-

    http://www.tds-tr.com/tds2/html/tr30_lite.html

Very good, can customise the volume, duration and frequency of the
warning and alert bleep, make the screen go different colours for an
alert, only gives out a muted alert if you're not speeding, and a "full
on alert" if you are. Hasn't missed a camera site yet, but also doesn't
    go mad all the time.
