Perhaps the OP should have differentiated between production operators
and skilled men because there's a World of difference but both work in
    factories.

We pay our guys between £200- 300 per day for carrying out machining
work on power stations and only about 50% of them are time served
engineers. Last summer we employed one guy who'd previously been
setting up exhibition stands in conference halls and we were throwing
well over a grand a week at him to pass kit to the bloke who actually
    knew what he was doing.
That depends on what you're willing to put yourself through. If you
want to breathe in a mixture of coal dust, asbestos and pigeon shit
    for 60 hours/week we'll pay you about £1100. That's only in peak
periods but over a year they're on a good screw and a lot of them sit
at home for 4 months of the year doing **** all because they don't
    need the money.

I don't think you understand that not everyone who works in a
'factory' is a production operator. Never mind, if you can't tell the
difference between a packer and a guy getting paid a decent wage for
programming & setting CNC machines manufacturing close tolerance
    components that's your problem.

  7. You would be surprised. I have worked in factories. In fact I have worked
in factories before you had enough bladder control to abandon your nappies
While I do have to admit that I have been one of those who would wear a
white dust coat I do have some knowledge of the blue boiler suit wearing
underclasses and it has been my experience that 9 out of ten people who
work there are minimum wage earners unlikely to even live long enough to
take their pensions and those fortunate enough to earn 50k a year would
never style themselves as mere factory workers but would instead have a
suitably impressive job title to brag to the press about. For the record
my bragging rights nearly always extended to the use of the title Engineer
and rightfully so, it is what you get for being a time served apprentice
    with additional skills..

  8. Does your memory go back as far a bloke called Mick The Hod?

He was a hod carrier, a labourer for a bricklayer. This bloke was on the
telebox many years back because he was an exceptionally fit and strong
young man who was able to keep 4 brickies supplied rather than the
traditional 1 and was paid 3 times the rate of an ordinary hoddy. Drove a
proche, lived in a big detached house on knob hill, sent the kids to
private school and all that shit but was nothing more than a strong back
who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

The beeb is spot on where it talks about Sarko and his lack of knowledge,
respect or whatever for farmers. He hasn't got a clue. It would be funny if it
weren't for the fact that 60% (IIRC) is given over to farming...

Well, yes but say, for the sake of an example, I[1] lost my job,
spunked £5k on a Segway and then got done for it. I would sort of
expect the Beeb to report me as an "unemployed computer programmer" not
    an "unemployed office worker".

[1] Or you, but I don't know what you do exactly so couldn't use you as
    the example.

I read the Guardian (content synced every morning) on my phone.

The only things I ever seem to print are gig tickets and expense claim
forms. Everything else is soft copy.

I had a part-time job "programming and setting" (Bridgeport) CNC
machines (via fucking CBM thing (8032 or something, not an actual
"PET") and paper tape punch) when I was 17 or 18 or so. It was a
fucking piece of piss in the mid '80s, and I can't imagine it's got
more difficult - just keep the cutting fluid handy.

Oh, and try to remember that titanium billet gets hotter than
    aluminium when you mill it.

    Ouch.
