Does this mean that he needs a helmet, licence, registration and insurance?

Amazing, isn't it. A good device, available from telcos for a reasonable
price, in the hands of lots of people. Anyone'd think quality + price *
availability would lead to a lot of people having one.

it comes with a USB charging cable - do you really not have something
you can just plug it into most of the time (say, you know, a computer
    or something)?

Also, be reasonable - the battery life is fine if you don't actually
    use the thing ;-)

    I'm sorry for your loss[1]

[1] hey, you probably know, but Motorola devices suck dead donkey
dick. Apart from the late, great, 68K processor series, of course. And
**** Six Sigma while we're at it.

Hardly a problem unique to the Desire.

Simplest trick is to turn off 3G. It's rare to actually need that kind
of bandwidth and it makes an enormous difference.

That and pick up one of these as a spare if you're going to be away from
a charging opportunity for 24 hours...

Yes, but that's sort of not the point of a mobile phone. Hacing to plug
it in every time I sit down.

I might well get a desk cradle though.
Absolutely. Wireless off, GPS off, GPRS off :)
Actually what gets me most is how it seems to be to be un-predicatble.

It'll look like there's loads of life left, then it's suddenly gone, and
you're actually not near a desk or similar.

Quite. Apparently the new Defy is supposed to be good. Not as good as the 68K
    series though.

Just *seems* worse than (for example) my Touch Diamond 2, though I did
have to buy a new battery for that.
I'm not actually seeing that as an option. Give me a clue?
A friend has tried similar, and said it was total crap. Is that one
    you've used?

I haven't actually switched mine on for three days. The novelty has worn
off. It's sitting on a charging dock on my bedside table, on call divert
unanswered or unavailable to my pikey old Samsung slider phone on PAYG
that can last for a week on standby and lives in my pocket. The Desire
was very handy on my train trip before Xmas, and has done Satnav service
several times since then on the car charger. I'll be taking it to the
BRYCS round tomorrow to keep me amused. otherwise, for day to day
communications the Samsung does what I need. I don't even do to a lot of
SMS unless on a holiday or away on a hill climb weekend.

Just the job when the extra functionality is required though.

Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Network mode > GSM
    only

I switch WCDMA on when I need it (not that it seems to be available much
on Vodafone) so I've got a widget ("2G/3G") that takes me straight to
    the relevant menu.

Yeah. It's not as good as it claims to be, but it's about as good as the
OEM battery and it's dirt cheap.
