Does this mean that he needs a helmet, licence, registration and insurance?

Be thankful for that. I'm hoping it'll work in my favour when our
possible redundancies (5% overall in Basel, apparently) are announced
    on Monday...

Eh? I thought the whole point[1] of these was that you had to get a
new one every nine months? I wouldn't have noticed, of course, but
just assumed you'd bought into the whole 'disposable' concept.

[1] From the manufacturers POV, of course.

Depends on the journalist, dunnit?)

What I mean is, I wonder if some journos simply use "iPhone" as a
    catch-all for "smartphone".

Good question. Bad typing on my part. 60% of land in France. 70% of
French exports are agriculture related which is probably a more
    relevant statistic however.

Indeed. I waited until I thought the technology had matured enough to
justify having one. Can't see me needing anything fancier for at least
    another two years.

I was discussing this with my nephews at Xmas. One is being required to
look in to an iPhone application for his employer (he thinks they
haven't even hear of Android yet - they are something to do with
insurance). Both have HTC Android phones. We came to the conclusion that
iPhones are for people who aren't tech savvy and Android are. The free
SDK and open market place for apps being one obvious reason.

    Me.

I'm still using a Sony c510 for it's several day battery life on one
charge, and will probably do so for the rest of the year.

I'm due an upgrade in March so spent some time looking at new phones
in Best Buy. all the ones there seem to have a lot bigger screen (made
my iphone look almost tiny) and are now 4G.

"It depends". I'm pretty sure my chance to upgrade is much more
frequently than 18 months, although the contract may be that long. I'm
with Orange on a not cheap tarrif. I upgraded from the Hero to the
Desire, flogged the former for a tidy sum (around £120 IIRC) on ebay.

US only AFAIK, faster than 3G (10x or thereabouts? I CBA to Google
either). Verizon have spent a fortune on it.

    Champ wibbled forthrightly:
I think wine and cheese probably play a large part of that. But
    checking wikipedia:

    ---
As the world's second-largest agricultural exporter, France ranks just
after the United States[13]. The destination of 70% of its exports are
other EU members states. France also provide agricultural exports to
many poor African countries (including its former colonies) which face
serious food shortage. Wheat, beef, pork, poultry, and dairy products
    are the principal exports.

    ...

The French agricultural sector received almost €11 billion from EU
subsidies. France's competitive advantage is mostly linked to the high
quality and global reputation of its products, among which are some of
the world's most renowned agricultural productions like wine or cheese.
Such world-famous productions goes a long way to create a thriving
    domestic sector.

where did you get that 70% figure from? If it's the quote in your reply to
Champ you might want to read it again.

    According to
    http://agriculture.gouv.fr/IMG/pdf/panorama_agriculture_ed2008EN.pdf
agriculture is just 2.2% of French GDP at 42 billion euros.

French exports total $456 billion and only about $56 billion of that is
agriculture. Main exports are machinery such as cars, planes & militaria.

  18. I would have thought that the more relevant statistic would be the amount
of French "agriculture" which would not happen if the EU subsidies were
    taken away.
