Opening your visor right up at a junction sends an automated message to
the driver in front to clean their windscreen.

You get an itchy knob just after you've put on your leathers.

Heading off in the opposite direction,
http://www.jawamotorcycles.co.uk/models.html is a bit less daft, I was
rather surprised that they are still making new ones. It even comes with
electric start and oil injection nowadays.

The Boss Hoss did cross my mind, as did that (actually) four-wheeled
monstrosity, the name of which I forget, that consisted of an engine
with a skinny wheel at each corner - but these possibilities were
discounted as being totally out of the reach and knowledge base of the
    newbie.

You remember you've just refilled your Zippo two minutes after the
burning sensation on the outside of the right thigh, just below the
pocket starts. Ten minutes after getting on the motorway, just as the
    sign "Services 22 miles" appears.

Ho yuss. Had that recently & it took about three weeks for the scab to
    go.

Bearing in mind that a tiny quantity of refined lighter fuel can hurt
that much - how did the old-time racing drivers manage to carry on?
There's numerous accounts of them driving the last twenty laps of a
race sitting in fuel, because the tank split, or the refuelling can was
    directed into the cockpit *again*.

    Unsurprisingly, you miss the point.

    Even though it's obvious.

    By a country mile.

    Once again.

Are you asking or telling? If your attempt at a sentence made any
sense it would be easier to tell.

I'm not going to apply the written standards for clinical services or the
financial times to usenet. Oh no. I'm not.

The meaning, the "humorous aside", was clear enough.

I honestly don't know why anyone bothers about little issues of spelling,
punctuation or grammar in news posts. As long as the porpoise or message or
intent is clear and the top/bottom/sig rules are clear, I'm happy. Lots of
people are reading/posting as an aside to more important things going on in
other windows and screens. Sheesh I don't even take the slightest exception
to the format of Nige's posts.

It would be a bit like expecting people to speak BBC English outside work
(1). On the subject of which there was a delightful little bio of Joyce
Grenfell on one of the FreeViews last night.

    (1) I will admit to being an Office Nazi in this respect <hangs lib head in
    shame>

Thanks Ben, a little big to start with though. I was looking at the
smaller Bandit, does anyone have a view on these for some commuting in
    London, weekend fun and trips?

Yeah, I would quite like something cheap and cheerful, but I'm in
London and I hear many are flogged to death by couriers, then clocked,
etc. I don't have any experience of buying a bike, so might be a
    gamble.

Same will apply to 600cc Bandits, Transalps etc.

If you can, buy a bike from someone you know or at least someone known
here as being reliable. There are plenty of UKRMers in London and some
of them might be prepared to look over a bike that takes your fancy.
Start monitoring Ebay *completed* auction prices to get an idea of what
is available in your price range.

  17. Never buy right at the bottom price for any bike. You'll end up buying
something needing work and most likely spend much more than you had
anticipated getting the bike straight. Cheaper to buy something
half-way decent to start with; unless, of course, you fancy doing a lot
    of spannering yourself.

The 600 and 650 are also excellent budget bikes. I bought the 1250
because I do (did) a lot of motorway work), and frankly, well, because
    I could.

600 Bandit, great value for money, good all-rounder, does most things
pretty well, good choice for a first middle-weight bike.
